As the calendar page turns to October, many of the new Food Network shows are baking related. Is Halloween the biggest baking holiday?

Halloween has become one of the most celebrated holidays. From kids trick or treating to adult’s Halloween parties, the spooky holiday is a huge event. Halloween spending on costumes, decorations and treats continually grows. Baking, especially Halloween themed and fall themed treats, are everywhere. It seems that Halloween is the Food Network’s biggest baking holiday.

Starting September 25, the Food Network will air multiple new baking shows. From the highly anticipated debut of Jason Smith’s new show, Best Baker in America, to the always popular, Halloween Wars, The Food Network is Halloween central. Growing up, Halloween was just a day where kids received copious amounts of candy. Today, Halloween is a month long celebration of the spooky, creepy and sugar filled baking goodness.

It doesn’t seem that anyone specifically declared Halloween as a baking holiday. Over time, the whole experience seemed to have evolved. No one is waiting for Thanksgiving pies and Christmas cookies to warm up the oven. Today, October is filled with apple spice, sugar-topped cupcakes and pumpkin everything.

The Halloween themed Food Network programming combines the visually impressive aspect of the baking world with impeccable baking skills. While we may wish to have smell-o-vision, viewers can only drool over these delicious Halloween themed creations.

Like many Food Network shows, these Halloween themed programs serve as inspiration for the home baker. Granted, few people can great a five foot tall sugar sculpture or 100 cupcake display, the home baker can adapt some of the flavor combinations, ideas and inspiration into their Halloween treats.

For example, instead of store bought cupcakes, the home baker can modify the boxed cake mix with fresh ingredients, additional spices or even creative decorations. The ideas don’t have to be complex. Instead, the final product is inspired and definitely not boring.
