Best Baker in America returns for its second season on May 7. These accomplished pastry chefs are ready to earn the baking title.

After a successful first season, Best Baker in America returns for season 2. Food Network fans will be happy to see fan favorite, Jason Smith returns along with Marcela Valladolid as judges. New this season is host Scott Conant, Chopped judge and successful restaurateur. This new season will feature 14 challenges that will put these accomplished pastry chefs to the test.

Host Scott Conant (L) with Judges Marcela Valladolid and Jason Smith as Contestant Becca Craig presents her dish Almond Chocolate Citrus Petit Four with Chocolate Glaze with Citrus Tuille, during judging of the Skills Challenge, Cake, Glorious Cake, Make One Dozen Decorated Petits Fours, as seen on Best Baker in America, Season 2.

Unlike other Food Network baking competitions, Best Baker in America features well-known, accomplished, professional pastry chefs. The list of this year’s Best Baker in America contestants include:

"Becca Craig (Philadelphia, Pa.)Kym DeLost (Chicago, Ill.)Jeremy Fogg (New Orleans, La.)Frania Mendivil (Los Angeles, Ca.)Leigh Omilinsky (Chicago, Ill)Lasheeda Perry (Atlanta, Ga.)Max Santiago (Miami, Fla.)Jean-Francois Suteau (White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.)Adam Young (Mystic, Conn.)"

Looking at this list, the names read like a who’s who in the pastry world. From Jean Banchet awards to Zagat lists, these pastry chefs have a long list of accolades. A few of the contestants have previously appeared on Food Network shows. These pastry chefs definitely have the talent and creativity to impress both judges and viewers. Overall, this season is stacking up to be quite a pastry competition.

One of the best parts of last season was the technical knowledge shared on each episode. While some Food Network shows look for the glamour shots and entertainment value, home bakers could learn a lot of good baking advice on this program. All those professional baking tips can make a home baker much better.

Looking at this list of competitors, it is refreshing to see a strong representation of women. While last year’s finalists were all men, this year’s competition could see a woman baker earn the title. Personally, I’m a huge fan of the two Chicago pastry chefs, Kym DeLost and Leigh Omilinsky. Omilinsky’s desserts at Nico Osteria are worth every single delicious, decadent calorie.

Mark your calendars for May 7 as Best Baker in America returns for season 2. Too bad the show doesn’t come with taste-o-vision.
