As Wendy’s announced its two Made to Crave menu items, it begs the question, are jalapeno poppers the next food flavor trend? While jalapeno peppers tend to be a kitchen staple, the classic bar menu appetizer seems to be “popping up” everywhere. What makes this flavor so craveable?

According to Pitco, the phrase jalapeno popper can be attributed to Anchor Food Products. Later, the name was acquired by Heinz. Today, the phrase has a more general meaning. Instead of being a particular brand, it is a type of food or menu item.

In some ways, the flavors of the jalapeno have ties to the classic Chili Rellenos in Mexican cuisine. The similarities of a chili stuffed with cheese and fried seems obvious.

What makes jalapeno poppers so craveable?

While spice and bold flavors have been a food trend for a while, there is something decadent, tempting and just satisfying about the combination of spicy, creamy and crunchy. Even a person who might not smoother a burger or a chicken sandwich with jalapeno slices is happy to indulge in that jalapeno popper.

Since the cheese tends to temper the spiciness of the jalapeno pepper itself, it makes the flavors more approachable. Although the heat is not bland, it is often a more balanced bite.

Wendy’s found a way to bring those classic jalapeno poppers flavors into both its chicken sandwich and salad. While the heat is clear, it is the combination of flavors and textures makes it quite enjoyable. Although eating a plate of jalapeno poppers may not be a dinner, these menu options are.

Aldi has a creative take on the jalapeno popper. Part of the Aldi finds for the week of February 24, the Mama Cozzi’s Pizza Kitchen Jalapeno Popper Pizza is a perfect choice.

Mama Cozzi’s from Aldi always finds ways to bring food and flavor trends to the table. With this pizza, it has that iconic combination of flavors. Served on a thin crust, it mimics the crunchy quality that people expect. Priced at just $3.99, it will definitely be a big Aldi find.

Whether jalapeno poppers are big food flavor trend or just a coincidence, all the tasty choices are a reason to take a bite. Don’t let the heat scare you.

What do you think will be the next flavor trend?
