Salad

There’s no denying that salad and pizza go well together in a meal. In fact, I’d argue that a nice, fresh salad is the perfect way to begin any pizza night. It expands the stomach and prepares the way for you to do some serious damage.

But to add salad directly on top of your pizza and call it a topping just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. So, the saying, “It all goes down the same pipe,” doesn’t work either. Because last I checked, we taste pizza with our tongues, not our throats.

While basil works for Neapolitan style pizzas, and spinach works in other cases, lettuce and other salad mix-ins don’t cut it. Besides, who’s really eating a salad without any dressing? I’ll admit that I often like to ask for a side of ranch to dip my slice into every now and again; I just make sure they hold the lettuce.

If you ask me, this seems like the work of someone who wasn’t getting enough greens in their diet, and decided to take it out on quite possibly the best food in the world. But just because it looks and tastes healthier, doesn’t mean it actually is. News flash, adding a side salad to your pizza doesn’t it make it any less calorically-dense.

Much like pickles, lettuce goes perfectly well with a lot of things, with pizza being one of them. Just make sure it comes before the pizza, not on top of it.
