French Dip Sandwich

The French Dip Sandwich is yet another food that is inaccurately named according to it’s origin. Contrary to it’s name, the French Dip was first created in Los Angeles, California at Philippe’s in 1918.

Similar to the Italian Beef in Chicago, the French Dip Sandwich is also served Aus Jus, but on a French roll or baguette. The roast beef is topped with Swiss cheese, onions and is typically submerged in the broth of the roast beef, hence its name.

This sandwich is oddly not as popular nationwide as it should be, but it’s still a staple in the Los Angeles area. Even still, you’d think that the second largest city in the country would do a better job of putting one of their creations on the map.

I enjoyed this sandwich the one time I had it, but it didn’t exactly blow me away. The concept is there, but I truly believe that the Italian beef takes everything good about this sandwich and makes it better.

Even still, if you’re ever in LA and would like something other than a burger or avocado toast, I strongly recommend grabbing a French Dip sandwich.

Where to enjoy: Phillipe’s – Los Angeles, California

Phillipe’s is one of two places that claim credit for creating the French Dip. The sandwich is typically served with potato salad, but ironically, no French fries are served at this restaurant.

Where it’s overhyped: I’ve only ever tried Phillipe’s, but I’ll certainly let you know if and when I try a bad one.
