National Wine and Cheese Day will be celebrated on July 25, 2021.  What will you be doing on this very gouda day? Why not uncork that precious wine you’ve been saving for a special occasion and pair it with a fabulous cheese or better yet, whip up a magical cheese dish to pair with it.

There’s more to wine and cheese pairings than just the traditional brie with champagne or Stilton and port wine combinations. National Wine and Cheese Day is the perfect time to explore so many varieties of cheese and cheesy dishes that make lovely pairings with wine.  Do you love mac and cheese? How about pairing lobster mac and cheese with a buttery unoaked chardonnay. (Mini lobster mac and cheese bites will make an elegant hors d’oeuvre for your next soirée.)  Top a grilled filet mignon with Maytag blue cheese paired with a big bold Cabernet Sauvignon. Even a simple cheesy pepperoni pizza becomes a class act  paired with Italian Chianti or Barbera. The possibilities are endless!

One of the best ways to get started with your National Wine and Cheese Day celebration is to take a peek at What to Drink with What you Eat, by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page. A fabulous resource book for pairing most any wine you can imagine with all types of food. You will want to make this your “go to” book for all of your wine and cheese tastings, dinner parties, even casual get togethers. One of the most fun things about this book is that it explains the expected pairings and then surprises us with the unexpected – Domino’s pizza and Merlot, cheesecake and Moscato d’Asti, and Enchiladas with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Plus this lovely book has wine pairing tips by sommliers, cheese-mongers and chefs from around the world.

It’s always fun to begin any celebration with champagne or sparkling wine. It’s especially appropriate when celebrating the marriage of wine and cheese! Rosé bubbly has become very popular because it pairs well with so many dishes. Possibly one of the best things about rosé champagne, cava and prosecco is that it begins and ends an dinner party perfectly. And a delightful selection of triple creme cheeses pair perfectly with a bubbly rosé  for an appertif or a cheese course before dessert.

What special bottle of wine will you open for National Wine and Cheese Day?
