What are a classic summer treats? The best frozen treats offer a way to cool off on the long, dog days of summer. From a simple scoop of vanilla ice cream to a huge, elaborate milkshake, everyone has a favorite frozen treat.

While some classics will always be part of the annual rite of summer eating, a few new frozen treats appear each year. From the special movie themed DQ Blizzard to the newest fad in the frozen foods aisle, variety can keep the summer boredom away.

As the school year comes to a close and Memorial Day marks the start of summer, it is time to start stocking the freezer with some of the best frozen treats. Hopefully there is enough room in the freezer for at least a few of these sweet delights.

Over the top milkshake

Sometimes summer allows everyone to overindulge, just a little. Many restaurants offer huge, over the top milkshakes. From gigantic sizes to extreme ingredients these milkshakes are epic summer food.

Many restaurants offer these over the top milkshakes. Planet Hollywood, Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, Sugar Factory and many others have a long list of gigantic mugs of ice cream goodness. For these milkshakes, the fun isn’t just the ice cream. It is the toppings.

From candies to cupcakes, these gigantic milkshakes are a sugar overload. Enjoying one all by yourself is an enormous task. Make sure that you have a huge appetite.

If you’re not near a restaurant that serves one of these milkshakes, it is easy to create one at home. Simply add lots of fun extras to a classic milkshake. From candy to cookies, there are many options. Personally, I recommend adding some cereal for a cereal inspired milkshake. I dare you to try it.

Klondike bar, skip the stick

The old school commercial said it best, what would you do for a Klondike bar? The chocolate covered ice cream bar has secured it place on its list of best frozen treats. But, that original Klondike bar isn’t the only version in the freezer.

Over the years, Klondike has added more flavors to its line. From candy bar mix-ins to various ice cream flavors, there is a different Klondike bar for every day of the week. New for this summer, Klondike added minis to its options.

The new mini versions, available in original and REESE’s, offer just a taste of the classic frozen treat. Who says that good things don’t come in little packages? Now no one has to feel guilty about enjoying a sweet summer treat.

Popsicle, just a popsicle

Growing up, who didn’t jump at the chance to have a popsicle? Sure, a few flavors weren’t your favorite (I always put back the orange ones). Sometimes if you were lucky, you got a double popsicle, instead of having to break into two sharable pieces.

The popsicle is a classic frozen treat because it is simple and refreshing. The treat is basically flavored sugar water. Still, on a hot day, it is makes you better.

Over the years, the popsicle has changed. The flavors are bigger and bolder. Instead of just orange, cherry or grape. There are sour, tropical flavors and sometimes even boozy popsicles. Basically, there is probably enough flavors to eat a different one every day of the month.

Still, that classic, old school popsicle is a just as refreshing today as it was when I was in grade school.

MAGUM Ice cream Tubs

The MAGNUM ice cream frozen treats became very popular. The luscious chocolate shell covering the creamy vanilla ice cream is very decadent. Sometimes, ice cream on a stick isn’t the best choice. On a special evening, no one wants to drip ice cream as it falls off a stick. Luckily, there is another way.

MAGNUM introduced its ice cream tubs earlier this year. These ice cream tubs bring all the flavor of the traditional MAGNUM in a more convenient format. Time to grab a spoon.

Whether you prefer simple, like chocolate and vanilla, or more complex, raspberry and chocolate, these MAGNUM Ice Cream Tubs are delicious. Each and every bite has a combination of ice cream and chocolate. You will definitely need a bigger spoon.

These ice creams aren’t necessarily single serving sizes, but you could keep one all to yourself. You don’t have to eat the whole thing in a single serving, although you might want to keep eating till it is all gone.

Ice Cream Sandwich

Another classic treat, the ice cream sandwich can come in many forms. From the old school ones wrapped in paper to the elevated ones that sublime flavors, ice cream sandwiches are perfect for summer. The only downside to these frozen treats is keeping your fingers clean.

The key to a great ice cream sandwich is making sure that the cookie flavor works with the ice cream flavor. The old school, classic version has vanilla ice cream with a chocolate cookie wafer. The cookie can’t be too crisp or the ice cream will ooze out the sides. The amount of ice cream can’t overpower the cookie. It is all about balance.

While many ice cream brands make ice cream sandwiches, it is quite easy to make this frozen treat at home. You don’t even need to bake your own cookies. The key is to soften your ice cream before making the sandwiches. Then, put the sandwich back in the freezer to set.

Playing with flavor combinations can be fun too. Chocolate chip cookies with salted caramel ice cream is lovely. Kids might like sugar cookies with some birthday cake ice cream. Or, play with sprinkles, nuts or even candies on the edges. The possibilities are many.

The perfect tropical treat for Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort guests, the delicious Dole Whip soft serve and Dole Whip floats can be found at Pineapple Lanai outside the Great Ceremonial House. This walk-up window is the only dedicated spot for the Dole Whip outside of the Magic Kingdom. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is located at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. (Disney)

If you have visited Disney, you know that there is another frozen treat besides the Mickey Ice cream. The Dole Whip is a must have Disney dessert, frozen treat or otherwise. The sweet, yet tart summer treat is also an anytime delicious treat.

For those people unfamiliar, the Dole Whip is pineapple flavored frozen dessert. It is similar to a soft serve ice cream. It is tart, refreshing and totally addictive. While first offered just as soft serve, now park guests can get it as a float. And, for adults, a few Disney locations even have an adult version with a rum floater.

Since most people can’t just visit Disney when they have a Dole Whip craving, many cooks have created copycat recipes. A quick search of Pinterest show numerous recipes. Which one is the best? That’s up to your personal taste.

As for me, I will be heading to a Disney theme park this summer to curb my Dole Whip craving. Maybe I might even have two.

Ice Cream Sundae

An ice cream sundae is one of the classic summer treats. That simple scoop of ice cream is transformed into an explosion of tastes and textures. The worst part is when you reach the bottom of the bowl and it is all gone.

Like many frozen treats, the ice cream sundae as evolved from that scoop of ice cream with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a cherry on top. Today’s sundaes are multiple ice cream flavors, enormous amounts of toppings and a bowl big enough for the whole table.

For example, Sugar Factory has an ice cream sundae that can feed at least 12 people. The King Kong Sundae has 24 scoops of ice cream, sauces, cookies, brownies and more. Plus, it comes with sparklers on top.

While this extreme ice cream sundae might be too much for the normal person, an ice cream sundae bar is a great summer indulgence. Pick a couple of ice cream flavors, a few sauces and a variety of toppings. Everyone can customize their frozen treats just how they want them.
