In Holiday Baking Championship Season 5 episode 5, the bakers must put a new spin on some holiday classics. Can trending flavors give holiday favorites a tasty update?

Holiday Baking Championship Season 5 episode 5 gives the five remaining bakers a big challenge. While some holiday treats are always classics, food trends are slowly taking over those favorite treats. From new flavor combinations to a food mash-up, the traditional occasionally gets an update. But will these bakers achieve holiday bliss?

According to the Food Network, Holiday Baking Championship Season 5 episode 5 synopsis states the following:

"Five bakers have to update traditional rugelach with unexpected new flavors like cardamom, grapefruit, guava paste, peanut butter or chai; the judges are craving their favorite ingredients in the form of a light and creamy tiramisu in the main heat."

The unexpected flavors have some great options and some flavors that are quite concerning. First, a rugelach is often a Jewish pastry. A traditional sour cream dough is filled with raisins, walnuts or sometimes fruit preserves.

The key to this new flavor rugelach challenge is to find a way to keep the flavors balanced. While the cardamom and chai could work well, the grapefruit and guava could be a little more difficult. It’s too bad that Julia was voted out last week. She could have done extremely well with the guava paste in this challenge.

  • The main heat challenge focuses on the judges’ favorite ingredients. While this synopsis doesn’t state it, the preview clip showed Nancy Fuller talking about bourbon. It will be interesting to see how bourbon plays a role in lightening up a tiramisu.

Additionally, it will be curious to see if the bakers will have to incorporate all the judges’ favorite flavors into this one dessert. In many cases some flavors are harmonious and work together. If the judges’ favorite flavors are too diverse, this challenge could be quite difficult for the bakers.
