Top Chef Season 16 episode 2 celebrates a Kentucky favorite, Maker’s Mark. How will these cheftestants celebrate the iconic bourbon in this episode?

Top Chef Season 16 episode 2 takes on two very different challenges in this episode. After racing to an exciting start to the season, the cheftestants must show their versatility and knowledge in this week’s episode. Does anyone have an advantage in this week’s challenges?

According to Bravo, this episode Bourbon, Barrels and Burgoo, features the following.

“A pregnant Gail Simmons asks the chefs to fee her cravings; the chefs head to Makers Mark, the oldest U.S. distillery, to put their spins on a meal full of Kentucky classics, including burgoo, Benedictine, mutton, hoe cakes, and dumplings.”

The Quickfire challenge sounds interesting. The Top Chef season doesn’t quite seem the same without Gail Simmons. This challenge is a nice way to incorporate her into the season.

The premise of the challenge is interesting. Pregnancy cravings can be crazy. While the strange food mash-ups seem unlikely, it will be curious to see if pregnancy changes Gail’s palate. Will she want highly seasoned food or something more subtle?

While the Quickfire will give one chef immunity, the Elimination Challenge is a huge test for all the chefs. Since no one will know who has immunity till after the Elimination Challenge is over, everyone better have dishes that are on point.

While the cheftestants seem to be having fun at this dinner, nothing is ever that simple on Top Chef. It is curious that a few chefs mentioned that these Kentucky classics have similarities with other common dishes. Although some chefs might not be familiar with burgoo, they could find a way to bring those flavors into a modern interpretation.

In this Elimination Challenge, the Southern chefs could have an advantage. Many of these dishes have specific flavors and textures. Being familiar with the dish could serve them well. Then again, last week’s elimination saw a chef who was confident go home.

Looking at this episode, it is really nice to see Maker’s Mark be featured. The distillery and restaurant are a wonderful place to visit. From both the historic and culinary impact, Maker’s Mark is quite influential on the Kentucky culinary scene.
