Los Toros looks for revitalization on this week’s Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back episode. Can this Mexican restaurant find the spark to survive?

In this week’s Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back episode, Los Toros an established Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles looks to recapture its passion. At the brink of failure, the owner needs more than just a new look. Can Ramsay inspire this owner to find the drive to succeed?

After doing a little research, it appears that Los Toros has been operating since 1967. Truthfully, few restaurants have been operating for that long. Unfortunately, when a restaurant has a long, long history, the food, service and even ownership can become complacent. Is this part of the problem that Ramsay needs to fix?

Here’s the synopsis that FOX has provided for this Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back episode.

"Gordon Ramsay’s “Hell On Wheels” travels to Los Toros, a decades-old Mexican restaurant located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, CA. After intense investigation and surveillance, Chef Ramsay and his team discover an over-worked owner, buried in astronomical debt that’s taking tolls on his health. Ramsay will try to bring this failing restaurant back from the brink of disaster – all in just 24 hours. As the clock ticks down, Ramsay and his team transform this restaurant with a spectacular renovation, a fresh new menu and hope for the future in the all-new “Los Toros Mexican Restaurant” episode of GORDON RAMSAY’S 24 HOURS TO HELL AND BACK airing Wednesday, Feb. 20 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.While the exact issues of this episode seem unclear, the best guess is that the restaurant’s food isn’t staying fresh. Meaning, that the restaurant isn’t looking to improve, expand or reimagine recipes. Sure, a classic dish can be a signature, but it needs to entice guests to come back again and again."

A dish that might have been fabulous 10 years ago, could have lost its spark because the people cooking it are bored, complacent or otherwise disengaged. Even the slight tweak can make a huge different to the experience.

Like in previous episodes, the Los Toros episode shares a clip where Ramsay teaches the owner how to cook and plate a new menu item. Check out the video.

While this video works within the storyline, there is a wealth of information for the home cook and fan. One huge tip from this video is to put a little citrus/acid on the squash to help break down and cook the vegetable. Any home cook could look to boost her recipes with this simple idea.

Additionally, the plating explanation is helpful for the home cook. Granted, most people are probably not serving this type of plate every night for dinner. Still, the layering of components to create the perfect bite is important.

For the home cook, this video clearly shows how to build a plate with all the components. It is a feast for the eyes which entices the diner to grab a fork and enjoy the experience. These ideas can be helpful in creating better dishes at home.

While it appears that Los Toros is doing well (based on reviews), the restaurant will need to continue to stay relevant. Whether this redemption is a complete success depends on the owner.
