Ready for award winning pies? Spring Baking Championship Season 5 episode 2 has the bakers wanting for that blue ribbon for their tasty treats.

In Spring Baking Championship Season 5 episode 2, the bakers are feeling a little down home charm. With the County Fair being this week’s theme, could the only home baker score a big win or will the restaurant pastry chefs continue to dominate?

According to the Food Network, this week’s episode synopsis states:

"Spring is a time for fun at the fair, so the nine bakers are tasked with creating blue ribbon-worthy rhubarb pies with decorative crusts. The competition gets wild and wacky in the main heat when the competitors have to make larger-than-life, wild and wacky versions of favorite fairground treats."

For the pre-heat, the decorative crusts should be a game changer. In this competition, everyone should be able to create a delicious pie crust. While getting the crust to bake correctly in a short amount of time is always a concern in a competition, the decorative aspect should separate the top from the bottom.

Given last week’s water color cake challenge, the decorations were a little lackluster. From poor color choices to juvenile fruit decorations, these bakers need to up their decoration game. The judges will want more than just a leaf or scalloped edge.

For the main heat, the wacky fairground treats should be interesting. It isn’t clear if the concept is “large” or “crazy.” Those ideas are totally different directions.

With Duff as a judge, he knows how to do crazy fairground treats (Did anyone see that waffle cone on Buddy vs. Duff?) For these bakers to stand out, they need to focus on innovation. Sure a funnel cake bigger than your head is wacky, but it is something that you want to eat?

Today’s fairground treats need to be more. People want that amazing food photo (think Epcot’s new cotton candy) to share. Granted the flavor is always important, but the visual is important, too.

Given this week’s challenge, the bakers will need to find the right balance with flavor, innovation and presentation. Who will win and who will go home?
