The Busch Family Brewed is coming to MTV (and 4 more Brew TV needs)
Yuengling
Yuengling is the only privately owned, family-run business on this list. Founded by David Gottlob Yuengling (born with the German last name Jüngling) in 1829 (as Eagle Brewery), it has been owned and run by a Yuengling for 5 generations. The Yuengling Traditional Lager is the only lager in Pennsylvania, parts of Delaware, and South Jersey that can be ordered simply by asking for a “lager” (you’ll get confused looks almost anywhere else). There’s also Yuengling Ice Cream.
Once again, the domestic life of the current owner, Richard Yuengling, Jr., and his (grown) family may not be the true source of the series for Yuengling, but a documentary series chronicling their 190 plus years would be something to watch. The story of D.G. Jüngling coming to America, changing his name, and starting the brewery (as Eagle Brewery) and how his sons were involved in business and industry. Currently, the brewery is run by the family’s six daughters, Jen, Debbie, Wendy and Sheryl.
One of the more fascinating stories is how Yuengling thrived during Prohibition while other breweries hit hard times. Producing “near beers” (beverages with 0.5% alcohol content) and opening dance halls in Philadelphia and New York City; however, it was Yuengling Ice Cream that helped save the company.
Most recently, the Brewers Association changed the definition of what it takes to be considered a craft brewer, making Yuengling the largest craft brewery and sixth largest overall brewery. Yuengling’s rich history is ripe for our edutainment.
