Powered by Breakfast might sound like a simple concept. No Kid Hungry wants everyone to understand the importance of school breakfast.

Childhood hunger and food insecurity continues to impact millions of children. No Kid Hungry uses its initiative, Powered by Breakfast, to raise awareness of the importance of a school breakfast. Are you ready to make your voice heard?

Did you know that 1 in 7 kids in the U.S. are living with hunger? While that number is staggering, many people might never realize the problem. That family in carpool line looks just like every other family. The child in math class looks like everyone else. No one might know that she hasn’t had food since the school provided lunch the previous day.

The idea behind Powered by Breakfast is to increase the availability of breakfast served during school hours. No Kid Hungry believes that a school breakfast can help kids reach their potential. The organization is hoping that everyone will give their support to this program.

“When kids eat breakfast, they start their day fueled and ready to learn—but often breakfast programs operate before the school day begins,” said Laura Washburn, interim chief communications officer at No Kid Hungry. “This causes far too many students who may be living with hunger to miss out on school breakfast due to transportation barriers or other struggles at home.”

If you have ever gone too long between eating, you can understand that it impacts your thinking, emotions and more. From the inability to concentrate to feeling tired, hunger impacts every part of  living.

For a child, it has a bigger impact. Food is fuel for a child to grow, develop and learn. If they enter the classroom with an empty stomach, their ability to reach their full potential is limited.

Some schools in some states do offer free school breakfast. In some Florida schools, any child can get breakfast which can include cereal, fruit and milk. All the child has to do is walk into the cafeteria and ask for breakfast, no qualifications are needed.

Unfortunately, that situation is not the norm across the country. No Kid Hungry is encouraging people to sign an open letter to the nation’s leaders to help change how school breakfast is served. The hope is that the large-scale show of support will cause the nation’s leaders to make a change.

Many well-known names have joined the cause. While numerous chefs have always supported No Kid Hungry, “award-winning recording artist P!NK; actors Jeff Bridges and Kristen Bell; celebrity chefs and TV personalities Andrew Zimmern, Curtis Stone, Duff Goldman, and more have joined the cause.

P!NK said,  “As a mom—and as a human—this is unacceptable to me. I signed No Kid Hungry’s open letter to children to take a stand for kids, and to stand with the schools across the country who are serving breakfast during the school day and being a solution to this problem. We can’t keep letting our babies go without the basic fuel they need to be successful.”

If you would like to sign the open letter, please text ‘SIGN’ to 877-877.

Childhood hunger cannot be overlooked. Change is possible when people raise their voices and choose to act. The time is now to make a difference.
