New York Mets baseman Pete Alonso reveals his recipe for the perfect caramelized onion

While there are plenty of delicious grill side dishes to choose from, one underappreciated side is a sweet caramelized onion — or what some might call the perfect complement to any barbecue dish.

To complement his main dish, Alonso likes to keep his grilling sides fresh often opting for a mix that includes caramelized onions which he happens to have the perfect recipe for!

Craving a caramelized onion, try Pete Alonso’s perfect caramelized onion recipe

As Pete Alonso revealed via The Players’ Tribune, achieving the perfect caramelized onion takes only a few steps and only takes a handful of ingredients: sweet onions, cinnamon and your choice of either honey or maple syrup.

Once you’ve rounded up your ingredients, all that’s needed is to follow a series of easy steps making the recipe perfect for those with both extensive grilling knowledge and beginner cooks!

Ingredients: 

  • 2 sweet onions
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup

Instructions:

  • Cut out the top of the onions and reserve the cap.
  • Hollow out a shallow hole in the center.
  • Rub cinnamon into hole and drizzle in honey or maple syrup until just full.
  • Place the cap of the onion over the top of the hole.
  • Place onions on the grill for six to eight minutes, or until the honey has dissolved and the onion is tender.
