NERDS Candy believes that it can good to be a little nerdy.

Sometimes the simple ideas can lead to great discoveries. NERDS Candy have always been a favorite for both young and old. Whether it is the shake from the box, the fun flavors or just those cute, colorful characters, NERDS are always in style.

Looking back at the candy’s history, the original Willy Wonka Candy Factory created these little sugar candies in 1983. While people might debate the name, there is something to be said about celebrating the uniqueness of a whimsical character. Maybe that “nerd” is the one who stood out in a crowd and started the trend that everyone embraced.

In the past year, life and school have looked very different. It is more than just e-learning versus brick and mortar schools. Students and parents are looking to find new ways to think outside of the box, new ways to tackle problems and even look for the familiar to innovate.

This year, NERDS Candy has partnered with the 2021 Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. Through this partnership, the company will cover the cost for up to 1,400 students (or family groups) to participate in this “machine” competition.

Named after the popular American cartoonist, this machine competition has a long history. If you are unfamiliar with the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, the competition dates back to 1949 at Purdue University. In 2013, it became a national contest and many people look to see the creative machines from these talented competitors.

The task for the competition is straightforward. Students create a “machine” that completes a simple task. The task must be completed in at least 20 steps and should take no more than two minutes. The machines are scored.

While this is an educational contest, the students have fun with the event. Often, the teams use themes based on films or other pop culture references.

The whole point of these contests is to create a machine to do a simple task in the most unique, different or even funny way. It encourages kids to think outside of the box and embrace the different. Just like how NERDS Candy encourages everyone to embrace their own uniqueness.

If your student or family would like to participate in the 2021 Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, NERDS Candy is paying for 1.400 entries. Simply use “NERDS2021” at registration. In previous years, an entry fee cost as much as $495. Registration opens on September 9.

Whether or not you participate in the contest, take a moment to look at the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest and appreciate the creativity and the uniqueness of these creations. After all, sometimes it is good to be a nerd.
