While food trends ebb and flow, one term seems to have taken over the mindset of most quick service restaurants. For the restaurants that can disrupt the status quo, they can capture the guests’ cravings that they never knew that they needed.
Although chicken has been the menu item that has seen the most innovation in the past couple of years, there are still plenty of ways for restaurants to push the chicken envelope. From bold flavors to interesting food mash-ups, it seems that chicken is as important as the plant-based food menu takeovers.
How is the Taco Bell Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco disrupting the quick service restaurant marketplace?
As Taco Bell shared in its announcement, this new menu item is both a sandwich and a taco. It isn’t meant to spark “what is a sandwich” debate. Still, it brings up an interesting idea, why should quick service restaurant guests have to choose one food over another. Can’t they have both?
Starting on March 11, the Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco will be available in Nashville, Tennessee and Charlotte, North Carolina. A nationwide menu rollout will happen later in 2021.
According to Taco Bell, the chicken is marinated in a jalapeno buttermilk, then seasoned with Mexican spices. Finally, the chicken is rolled in a tortilla chip coating.
Thinking about this concept, the layers of flavors will make this chicken a must try. It is more than just a seasoned coating. By adding spice into each layer, the flavor will be bold.
In addition, Taco Bell is giving guests options. While the spicy chicken is nestled in a puffy, taco shaped bread, guests can add even more flavor to each bite. The spicy version has crunchy jalapeno slices. Both the regular and spicy versions feature a creamy chipotle sauce which could become a new favorite Taco Bell sauce.
While many people will be excited to taste this new Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco from Taco Bell, it is another example of the brand’s menu innovation. Previously, Taco Bell offered Chicken Chips, Crispy Chicken Chickstar and the Naked Chicken Chalupa. Given the current quick service restaurant trends, this new menu addition might be the most popular innovation yet.
