Are pizza donuts the next must have food mash-up?
While pizza is always a favorite food, pizza donuts could be that next sweet and savory treat turns the flavor into a breakfast, lunch and dinner choice. Forget that cold slice or another sweet doughnut, this food mash-up will make you rethink your favorite food.
Food trends are never predictable. Sometimes a little fun with favorite foods can create a new bite that makes people wish that someone had invented the flavor sooner. Sure, there have been a few ideas that have had people scratching their heads. Still, sometimes the out of the box flavor just makes you want to try it.
Combining sweet and savory together is often a tasty treat. That touch of salty can enhance sweetness. In many ways, the two opposite flavors bring out the best notes in each ingredient.
Did Digiorno just make pizza donuts?
While pizza has several food holidays on the calendar, National Doughnut Day is June 4 and Digiorno has found a way to bring together pizza and donuts. The DiGiornut is going to be a one-day only offering via the company’s Twitter account and everyone will want to win a taste.
According to Kimberly Holowiak, DiGiorno Brand Manager at Nestlé, “At DiGiorno we like to push the boundaries of what’s possible for pizza, and the DiGiornut is something we’ve been dreaming about for a while. At the same time, we’ve seen out of the box thinking from our fans on social media – connecting pizza with donuts. So we thought, why not have some fun and make this mashup a reality to celebrate National Donut Day.”
To be clear, the DiGiornut is not a donut with some cheese and sauce on top. DiGiorno describes the offering as “a delicious donut, stuffed with mozzarella cheese, topped with signature DiGiorno sauce, even more cheese and decked out with your favorite pizza toppings.”
Basically, it is a savory donut or a pizza shaped like a donut. This food mash-up isn’t too far out of the box. In many ways, families could adopt this idea for their own National Donut Day celebration.
Even the Doughnut Project took on the pizza doughnut idea. In collaboration with Hormel Pepperoni Cup N’ Crisp, it offered the Cheese the Day. This unglazed doughnut was topped with “homemade marinara sauce, fresh mozzarella and a mouthwatering serving of Hormel Pepperoni Cup N’ Crisp.” Served warm, it was a tastier way to start the day than a cold leftover slice.
With these two offerings it seems clear that pizza donuts might be the next big food mashup trend. Who said that certain foods can’t go together? Maybe it is time to think outside of the hole.
What two foods deserve to be the next great food mash-up? Can you predict the next food trend?
