Best Baker in America Season 4 episode 5: Bumpy and gooey cakes
As Best Baker in America Season 4 continues to travel across America, these Midwest desserts will have the bakers embracing both the sweet and the tart. Will there be a few bumps in their path or will everything be gooey good?
According to the Food Network, Best Baker in America Season 4 episode 5, “Midwest” features the following:
"The competition’s six remaining bakers must turn Michigan’s bumpy cake into a bumpy entremets using the featured flavor of cherries in the master challenge. In the bake-off, the competitors have to make mini versions of Missouri’s beloved gooey butter cake, and then host Carla Hall and judges Gesine Prado and Jason Smith eliminate one baker from the competition."
For those unfamiliar, the bumpy cakes are a Detroit favorite. The dark chocolate cake has a layer of buttercream that is smothered with chocolate. The bumpy characteristic is the long line of buttercream.
Turning that Detroit cake into an entremet with its stunning glaze takes away the bump. If there are bumps, lumps or divots in these cakes, the bakers might not be ready for the title Best Baker in America.
For the bake-off, the idea of creating the gooey butter cake might have everyone feeling a little overindulgent. That classic cake might have a funny name, but the flavor is everyone’s favorite bite. It will be interesting to see how the bakers turn that classic cake into something a little more elevated.
Throughout Best Baker in America, the top and bottom bakers have been unpredictable. From switches from top to bottom and back again, no one has found a way to secure their position at the top.
