Hot dogs can cause a heated food debate. Specifically, the idea of putting ketchup on a hot dog might get more than a side eye from a few people. While a hot dog can be dragged through the garden, loaded with chili or topped with a myriad of other options, only these people should put ketchup on a hot dog.
According to National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC), it is estimated that “150 million hot dogs on July 4th alone.” While July is National Hot Dog Month, the reality is that there are so many ways to enjoy a hot dog that everyone has a favorite. Still, ketchup is a controversial condiment.
From that Nathan’s Hot Dog with its infamous snap to the Chicago Dog with that neon green relish, everyone has a preference on enjoying that favorite summer time food. Although there may be no wrong time to enjoy a hot dog, there is one etiquette rule on hot dog eating.
According to NHDSC Hot Dog Top Dog Eric Mittenthal “The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council etiquette guide says only children should eat their hot dogs with ketchup.”
While this statement will definitely stir up a heated food debate, the reality is that the hot dog is a great vehicle for so many toppings. Although the top three regional varieties are New York, Chicago and Michigan Coney, these classic styles are not the only options.
From the over the top sports stadium varieties to even Tostitos creating that Next Day Delicious recipe, the hot dog sparks food creativity. One day it can be spicy and the next day it can be classic. Whether it is global flavors that influence the condiments or fresh ingredients from the garden, there is always room for another hot dog. Although no one has to eat 70 or more in one setting like Joey Chestnut.
As everyone lights up the grill this summer, think outside of the bun for that hot dog. Create a condiment bar with all types of options and see who can be the most creative. It could be the hit of the summer celebration. Just leave the ketchup at the kids’ table.
