In this episode, Gordon Ramsay Uncharted Michigan takes on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. While some people might be familiar with the term Yooper, this deep dive into this culinary adventure might have some people taking a road trip up North.

According to National Geographic, Gordon Ramsay Uncharted Michigan features the following:

"Chef Ramsay travels over the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where he uncovers the culinary gems that originated from the miners. Gordon dives into Lake Superior in search of burbot amongst shipwrecks, navigates the forest to hunt woodcock, and helps a monk build a fence for his thimbleberry jam bushes. He’ll need to work with local food legend James Rigato to learn the culinary secrets of the region in order to impress the local Yoopers, or forever be branded as a Troll who lives ‘below the bridge’ to the Upper Peninsula!"

This Gordon Ramsay Uncharted episode has a lot of items to discover. Many food television fans will remember James Rigato from his appearance on Top Chef Season 12 Boston. While he might have stayed low on the radar in that show, he has made quite a name for himself in the Michigan food scene.

While the culinary competition is an aspect to this food television show, the reality is that the ingredients discovered along the way are often more interesting. For example, burbot is a fish that might not often be found at the fish market.

Sometimes considered the poor man’s lobster, (similar to the phrase used for monkfish), the fresh water white fish has a similar taste to American lobster. It can be served in big chunks with butter for dipping.

In some ways, highlighting these types of ingredients is one of the keys to the Gordon Ramsay Uncharted success. When cooks focus on flavors, not necessarily just one particular product, the door is opened to many more possibilities. Hopefully, more and more home cooks use these shows as an opportunity to try new foods.
