While the pumpkin spice beverages are back at Starbucks, it isn’t the only fall beverage on the menu. The new Apple Crisp Macchiato proves that fall is apple season. It might be time to skip over the patch and head to the orchard for the most exciting fall flavor.

Building on the idea of the fall harvest, the Apple Crisp Macchiato presented a new challenge for the Starbucks team. The concept of blending fruit and coffee is not predominant on the menu. Still, that concept of robust coffee, crisp apple and a touch of sweetness captures the nostalgia that is often associated with fall.

As Raegan Powell, senior manager on the Starbucks research and development team, said “Fall at Starbucks brings customers back to the nostalgic flavors of the season and our team used that inspiration to create a new flavor that celebrates those feelings of comfort and familiarity.”

Since Spring of 2020, the Starbucks team started to test apple flavor combinations. From apple cider doughnuts to other apple desserts, the search to find the perfect flavor combination was launched.

For many people, an end to a meal is that combination of apple pie and coffee. While people can debate the type of crust or even the choice of apple, the truth is that apple, sugar and cinnamon pairs well with a robust cup of coffee. It is simple, timeless and always delectable.

According to Powell, “Consider how well a delicious slice of warm apple pie pairs with a cup of coffee or how well the combination of Starbucks roasty signature espresso pairs with warm spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg.”

The new Apple Crisp Macchiato brings the best part of apple dessert to that sip. Since this flavor inspiration is a crisp, it is about the warm, sweetness of the simplicity of a crisp. Blending apple and brown sugar, those flavors capture both a sweet and a touch of tart. Just like the balance in the perfect dessert, it is sweet but not overpowering.

In some ways, the highlight of this beverage is the Brown Sugar Apple Syrup. Many people might like this drizzle on ice cream or another dessert. That taste of sweet red apples and brown sugar is irresistible. And yes, it is ok to try to eat the drizzle first.

Available both hot or iced, the Starbucks new Apple Crisp Macchiato is the fall game changer. While there are plenty of pumpkin options in the patch, the orchard really only has one Apple Crisp Macchiato.

More importantly, this beverage launch could spark a whole new approach to coffee beverages. If people fall in love with this dessert-centric offering, could a peach cobbler macchiato be on the horizon for next summer?
