Anyone who has watched the 18 seasons of Top Chef waits for the mise en place challenge. It might be as iconic as Restaurant Wars. For the Top Chef Amateurs finale, the chefs race to put everything in place and earn that ultimate victory.
In the Top Chef Amateurs finale, the Gail Simmons is joined by Richard Blais and Tiffany Derry on the judging panel. Isaac Toups and Stephanie Cmar help the two amateur chefs, Nick Souksavat, Brett Bankson dice and chop their way through this iconic challenge.
For any Top Chef super fan, stepping into one of the most iconic challenges is both thrilling and unnerving. The pressure is on for these two opponents. One mis-step and they might be packing their knives before they even get the ingredients on the plate.

Even though the mise en place challenge has appeared 15 times on Top Chef, the nerves can get the best of the chefs. From shaking hands to missed details, this speed prep work is never easy.
Also, there is an added element of pressure in this challenge. Once an ingredient is used, it is off the table. Even though the teams might have a plan, that twist could change the whole dish. If you need garlic or onions and can’t use it, that chef might need to pivot.
Of course, there are ingredients that the team would rather avoid. Although this table doesn’t seem to have the dreaded artichokes or oysters, some food is easier to prep than others.
Even though these chefs are not professionals, this challenge shows that good cooking techniques and skills are essential in the kitchen. Although the home cook might not want to set up a mise en place challenge at home, it is a good practice to help gain confidence in their cooking. Smart prep work is vital to cooking success.
The Top Chef Amateurs finale, “No Room for Mis-takes” airs on Bravo at 9:30 p.m. ET.
