Holiday Baking Championship Season 8 episode 2 recap: Yule be merry and bright
As Holiday Baking Championship Season 8 episode 2 begins, it seems that the bar is open. While the spirited Food Network baking competition might cause a few bakers to thirst for a cocktail after the first challenges, the next set of desserts might have them wishing for a new treat under the tree. What unexpected twist was waiting to be revealed in this episode?
With immunity potentially being up for grabs, the bakers appreciate that the pre-heat is more than winning a special advantage. Even the best baker wants to rise to each and every challenge. As the bakers start to find their footing in the competition, a few patterns have emerged.
In the pre-heat, the bakers were divided into teams of two. Although the pairings seemed to be random, there might have been a method to the madness. The top bakers from the last episode were not randomly paired as teammates.
The baking pairs had to create a dessert that included a spirit, a mixer and a flavor. While this challenge seemed straightforward, baking with liquor is never simple. From the liquor flavor disappearing to being over served, finding that balance is the key to success.
Overall, the desserts were fairly successful. Although a few desserts had missteps, no one was getting kicked to the curb on this challenge.
In a twist, the pair winning the pre-heat were Jose and Naomi. The White Chocolate Panna Cotta excelled in both décor and flavor. The gilded twill was smart. Plus, the flavor put the bourbon front and center without being overpowering. It was a huge success.
Given that Naomi was on the verge of being eliminated, it showed that bottom bakers can rise to the occasion. Or, maybe the combination helped to whip up a victory.
How did the Holiday Baking Championship Season 8 episode 2 shake up the competition?
Although some of the bakers might have wanted to stay at the bar, the main heat wasn’t going to be rolling away. The next baking challenge was a classic holiday dessert, the Yule Log. While this challenge has been a staple on Holiday Baking Championship, this season’s twist added a few new elements.
The bakers had a specific flavor and decorative style. For winning the pre-heat, Jose and Naomi could switch décor or flavor with another baker. This advantage was a good one and both bakers used it. Naomi switched her flavor and Jose switched his décor.
It was interesting that Jose chose to switch with Adam. In the previous challenge, Adam switched with Jose. But, that decision backfired for Adam, since Jose won the challenge. Could it be déjà vu in this Holiday Baking Championship episode?
Overall, the yule log cakes were successful. No one had a huge fail (crumbling cakes, broken cakes, etc.). Basically, it came down to the least successful cake was going home.
As for the top cakes, the best ones were rather clear. Adam soared to the top, again. From his magnificent flavors to the impeccable décor, it was clear that he is the baker to beat.
After the first couple of challenges, it seems that Adam is on track to make the finale. It seems that some big twist or epic fall is the only thing that could derail him. While anything is possible, a favorite has definitely emerged.
While Adam’s status seems to be secure, another baker saw a swift fall. Naomi went from top to bottom. Although her flavors were good, the scale of her cake was off. It did not necessarily fit the theme and it stood out from the crowd, not in a good way.
In addition, Jennifer stumbled with her yule log. Even before the cake was served to the judges, Carla commented that she thought that the cake would be dry. If the judges can tell a flaw that far away, it is not a good sign.
Unfortunately, Naomi was sent home in Holiday Baking Championship Season 8 episode 2. Her dessert missed the mark on too many levels.
Her elimination makes a statement to the remaining bakers that no one is safe. Winning the pre-heat is not a guarantee into the next round. Anyone could be going home at any time, unless immunity is earned. But, based on the first two episodes, immunity may be that brass ring which is just beyond the bakers’ reach.
What did you think of these holiday desserts? Have you picked a favorite baker in Holiday Baking Championship Season 8?
