Since National Cake Day is celebrated on November 26, it is the perfect time to discuss the most popular cake flavor. Although many people might be serving a plethora of pies around Thanksgiving, the reality is that cake is a popular dessert.
From the favorite cake for a birthday celebration to the decadent chocolate cake that is irresistible, everyone seems to like a slice of cake. Even if you want the piece with more frosting or have a special way of creating the perfect bite, the concept of let them eat cake is more than Marie Antoinette’s phrase.

From the Shane Co survey, the brand looked at Google Trends data over the past year. According to that information, it determined “most searched cake flavors in each U.S. state over the past year.” Although the list included many favorite cake flavors, the top three choices were not necessarily what people assumed.
Instead of the always popular Funfetti, Chocolate or even Red Velvet cake, all of those iconic flavors were pushed down the popularity list. Looking the top three flavors, the most popular cake flavor might not necessarily be a cake at all.
According to the survey, the top three most popular cake flavors are ice cream cake, strawberry cake and molten lava cake. 10 states picked ice cream cake as their favorite cake, but it begs a question. Is it really a cake?
Sure, ice cream and cake are a classic combination. At celebrations many people enjoy a scoop of ice cream on top of their birthday cake. But isn’t an ice cream cake more about the ice cream than the cake? Isn’t the cake kind of an afterthought with this dessert?
Granted, everyone is entitled to their food opinions and people can debate these types of best of food lists, but it is curious that the most popular cake list features three cakes are not necessarily the typical choices. When was the last time that strawberry cake was requested at a special meal?
In the end, the reality is that cake is and always will be a popular dessert. Whether it is the one person who prefers that pistachio cake or maybe the other person who just wants plain vanilla, there is a slice for everyone’s food palate.
