Reginald VelJohnson talks holiday traditions and a little nutstalgia, interview
From one of the most infamous Christmas movies of all time to Family Matters, Reginald VelJohnson appreciates that some of the characters that he has portrayed are part of many people’s holiday traditions. For this holiday season, the successful actor has partnered with Planters to bring a little nutstalgia to the table. While not everyone can agree on every holiday tradition, there are always reasons to bring shellabrations to the table.
This holiday season, Planters and VelJohnson have released a special 80s inspired holiday music video. While the holidays are a time when people reminisce about years past, this new promotion captures that 80s vibe in a good way. Even if that hair cut is now cringe-worthy and the kids will never appreciate the painstaking effort to create the perfect mix tape, the spot captures the right balance of humor and holiday cheer.
As part of the Planters and VelJohnson partnership, the talented actor graciously spoke to FoodSided about his holiday traditions, a few snack recommendations and finally ending the debate on Die Hard as a Christmas movie.
Like many families, VelJohnson appreciates that holiday traditions create lasting memories. Specifically he said, “I think it’s important to uphold certain holiday traditions because the holidays provide lasting memories that we’ll carry with us forever.”
In his family, one tradition is similar to many others. VelJohnson said, that “getting a Christmas tree and decorating it with my family was always my favorite tradition.”
Although family traditions and family time is important during the holiday season, sometimes all that togetherness can be a little stressful. Still, VelJohnson wants everyone to be a little thoughtful.
Specifically he said, “the holidays can always be nutty, especially when coming together with family and friends that you haven’t seen in a while. Tensions can get high, but I think it’s important to try to understand our differences and just enjoy being together.”
Sometimes it takes just a little effort to find that common ground. VelJohnson said, “One thing that Planters is doing to help bring families together this holiday season is they are giving out nutstalgia boxes. These boxes have with classic board games and movies that everyone from different generations can enjoy.”

And, even if that game night gets a little spirited, VelJohnson has some simple advice. He said, “During the holidays my family and I like to play card games and it can get pretty heated. I’ll always put a bowl of mixed nuts on the table when we play because the salty zest always seems to calm the tension if it happens to rear its ugly head.”
For his family, Planters nuts have always been on the table. Recalling some of this family traditions, VelJohnson shared, “I remember my dad having Planters nuts around during the holidays and I am excited that I’ve continued that tradition during my own holiday celebrations. I love heating my nuts up in the microwave so they are nice and toasty when I eat them or serve them to guests. I also always love snacking on leftovers from my big holiday meal, which always includes a deep-fried turkey.”
Where does Reginald VelJohnson stand on the Die Hard Christmas movie debate?
And, since the many people enjoy watching a holiday movie leading up to Christmas, it had to be asked. Does VelJohnson think that Die Hard is a Christmas movie? His answer was clear.
“When we filmed Die Hard, it didn’t even cross my mind that it would be considered a Christmas movie. However, the audience certainly made me aware that they thought it was a Christmas movie and I completely agree. In the Planters music video, you see the debate come up at the dinner table and I let everyone know exactly where I stand.”
