After the sparkling wine has been drunk past the stroke of midnight, everyone is hopeful to have a momentous new year. Even if you are not superstitious, these things you should never do on New Year’s Day.
New Year’s Day is a time for new beginnings. Even if the resolutions do not start till day two or three, that fresh start is something that many people appreciate. It might be just turning the calendar page, but it is a way to feel refreshed.
But, no one wants to start the New Year in the hole. Although these concepts might be old wives tales, the past couple of years have proven that no one should tempt fate. Even if you have stepped on a crack before, maybe this year is the time to take a few more precautions.
Things you should never do on New Year’s Day
Skip the laundry
Did you never notice that grandma and mom didn’t do a lot of chores on New Year’s Day? It might not be the same as the Mother’s Day don’t list, but there is a tradition about skipping laundry on New Year’s Day.
Some people believe that doing laundry on New Year’s Day will wash away the good luck. Others say that it is washing in the dead for the New Year. In either case, skip that load of laundry, if possible.
Don’t take stuff out of the house
Although some people like to purge to start anew, it might be best to line-up all those items and wait till January 2 to take them out of the house. The old sentiment believes that more things will leave the house than come into it for the New Year.
Step away from the spending
While some people might like to get a jump start on the New Year, it is best to skip paying bills and try to not spend on New Year’s Day. Although some people can appreciate the idea of waiting a day to pay those holiday bills, the concept behind this superstition is clear. If taking money out on New Year’s Day sets the tone that you will be spending all year long.
And, are there other things that you should never do on New Year’s Day? Of course, many people have their traditions. From skipping work to avoiding certain food choices, the list is long. Still, maybe this year is the one that everyone chooses to binge watch shows and sit on the couch hoping to break the Groundhog Day cycle of the past couple of years.
