From brunch to National Bloody Mary Day, that classic cocktail can be more than just a handful of ingredients. With a few twists, there are many tasty ways to upgrade that Bloody Mary cocktail recipe.

Like many cocktails, the exact origins of a Bloody Mary are as muddled as the drink itself. While varying names denote different ingredients, one common element tends to tie them all together, hair of the dog. Maybe that designation is the reasoning why National Bloody Mary Day is celebrated on January 1.

Whether it is the tomato juice that makes people feel like they are getting some “good” in their sip or a cocktail that just seems to smooth away the rough edges from the night before, the Bloody Mary is often a brunch favorite. In some ways, that tomato forward flavor can pair with savory and sweet. Sometimes the cocktail can be a meal on its own.

Here’s how to make a classic Bloody Mary cocktail recipe

Ketel One Vodka Bloody Mary

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz. Ketel One Vodka or Ketel One Citroen Flavored Vodka
  • 3 oz. Ketel One Bloody Mary Base (recipe below)

Base Ingredients:

  • 1L Tomato juice
  • 4 oz. Lemon juice
  • 4 tsp. Salt
  • 1 tsp. Black pepper
  • 1 tsp. Smoked paprika
  • 5 tbsp. Horseradish
  • 3 Dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 7-10 Dashes hot sauce

Method:

  • Combine ingredients in a mixing glass. Shake with ice and strain into a Collins glass filled with ice.
  • Garnish with a celery stalk, olive, or lemon wedge to serve.

While that classic recipe is always en vogue, swapping a few ingredients can make a bold flavor difference. For example, adding some Balsamic Vinegar of Modena brings a more balanced sip to the mix. The punch of flavor from the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena rounds out the spicy qualities and other savory notes.

A word of caution when adding Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. It is best to use a high-quality, fresh product. If the idea is to boost flavor, it is best not to skimp on the ingredients.

While the Bloody Mary is often tomato juice forward, it might be time to change the color of that classic cocktail. Why not get a shot of greens in the glass.

Ketel One recommends a Green Mary. Made with celery and cucumber, this cocktail is fresh and bright. Plus, the spices included in this cocktail are quite enticing. And, who doesn’t feel good about getting a few more sips of green in the day.

While many people happily mix up a Bloody Mary Cocktail recipe at home, many restaurants and resorts turn the cocktail into a sipping experience. For example, Perry Lane Hotel in Savannah, Georgia offers a Bloody Mary Cocktail Cart. Featuring all the garnishes, everyone can have a cocktail that is satisfies their favorite flavors.

And sometimes, people prefer a twist on the classic. At the Condado Vanderbilt in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Bloody Martini is an elevated sip. Featuring translucent tomato water and locally sourced ingredients, this cocktail is the perfect sip for new beginnings.

Whether it is a simple recipe or an upgraded one, the Bloody Mary is always a satisfying sip. Cheers to the Bloody Mary.
