Lay’s Layers brings multi-dimensional snacking to the table
When a new year begins, food makeovers are a tasty part of the conversation. With the new Lay’s Layers, Frito-Lay shows that flavor shouldn’t be flat. While it might not be meta, multi-dimensional snacking is the wave of the future. Ready to experience all the flavors?
Snacking trends go in different directions. Over the years, there have been a push for global flavors. There has been a focus on balanced snack food choices. Even sometimes ancient grains have filled the bag.
While many of those topics have sparked people’s interest, the reality is that classic flavors never need a trend to make them part of the conversation. Although they might not labeled a trend, the reality is that people crave those flavors. But, they do appreciate new ways of enjoying the taste.
What are Lay’s Layers?
Although many people will always appreciate the iconic Lay’s chip for its crispy, crunchy deliciousness, Frito-Lay is adding to that eating enjoyment. These multi-dimensional, “one-of-a-kind potato bites” are more than just crispy. They are crunchy, flakey and bursting with tons of flavor.
Available starting mid-January, the Lay’s Layers are available in two flavors, Three Cheese and Sour Cream & Onion. Thinking about these two options, the flavors blend well with potato. Whether it is the classic baked potato topping or other snack flavors, they are approachable to a wide audience.
As a first choice, the Sour Cream & Onion will have many people excited. A classic combination, the snacks have just the right amount of tanginess with the crunch. Given how each bite is unique, there are plenty of little pockets of flavors. With each crunch another taste is revealed.
In some ways, that flavors and textures offer that satisfaction like a chip and dip scenario. One minute extra crunch and the next bursting with flavor. Before you know it, the bag will be empty.
The Three Cheese flavor is more nuanced. While it is a blend of cheddar, parmesan and gouda, it is more like a cheese explosion. The flavor is more routed in true cheesiness. Even though it is hard to tell where one cheese begins and the other ends, it is a blend that satisfies, almost like a great mac and cheese flavor.
Thinking about this snack, it would be great for a cheese board. Instead of crackers, this snack could be the textural component that people want. It would be a nice break from the other cheese flavors.
Also, the Three Cheese flavor would be great with a burger. Since many people like adding chips as a burger condiment, this option adds bolder flavor and texture. Just make sure that there is an extra bag available for a snack, too.
The Lay’s Layers will be sold a 4.75 oz bag, a 1.75 oz bag and .05 oz bags. They have a suggested retail price of $4.09, $1.99 and 2/$1 respectively.
What do you think of this snacking innovation? Do you think that other flavors would benefit from the “layers” treatment?
