The canned cocktails market has exploded over the past year. Even though the at-home cocktail bar might have all the tools of the trade, the convenience of a pour and enjoy beverage has its place. While many classic cocktails have been packaged in this convenient format, many people are looking for beverage innovation. Just because there isn’t a laundry list of steps to create that refreshment doesn’t mean that the flavor should be flat.
When Boston Beer Company introduced Bevy Long Drink, it came with a little explanation. Although some drinkers might have recognized the reference, others might not have appreciated that the term is more than just a name.
As part of the 1952 Summer Olympics, the Finnish government commissioned a special drink to serve guests. The Long Drink is a relatively simple cocktail that usually combines gin, grapefruit soda and tonic. Whether drunk on a chilly winter night or a warm summer day, the cocktail is bright, refreshing and an easy sip.
The Bevy Long Drink brings a taste of that traditional Finnish cocktail to the canned cocktail format. Available in two flavors, Hard Citrus Refresher and Hard Berry Refresher, this version captures the essence of the original cocktail but adds a note of approachability.
For example, unlike the traditional cocktail, Bevy Long Drink is a malt beverage. With a ABV of 5.8%, it lends itself to a more sessionable type beverage. Whether enjoyed as an aperitif or just an afternoon sipper, this beverage isn’t as potent as the traditional cocktail.
But, the essence of the Finnish cocktail is clear. The juniper notes are present yet not overly pungent. Unlike those old-school gins, the herbal qualities entice yet not overpower. It is in a way a touch of flavor that adds to the refreshing qualities.
While there are two flavors available, the Hard Citrus Refresher seems to capture the classic taste of this traditional cocktail. The balance of the brightness of the citrus with the punch of the juniper makes the flavor quite enjoyable. Although this Finnish style beverage might have been born out of a winter event, it will be quite delightful on a warm summer day.
