Football and food are always a winning team. While chips, dips and beer will always be part of the celebration, there needs to be a little more food on that football spread. Chicken wings are always a football favorite food, but how may chicken wings will be eaten during Super Bowl LVI?

According to the National Chicken Council’s (NCC) 2022 Wing Report, it is predicted that “1.42 billion wings” will be eaten during the big game. While that number seems to be gigantic, there is great news for chicken wing fans.

The NCC reports that there is no chicken wing shortage. After too many months of empty shelves and running to the store to be there on stocking day, the bounty of wings will have many people cheering.

Although the plentiful chicken wings in the meat section is a positive, there is a little extra that consumers might not want to hear. Unfortunately, chicken wing prices are higher than in years past.

NCC says that “Retail wing prices are up about $0.30 per pound on average from the same time last year.” While food costs seem to be up across the board, there are simple reasons for the higher costs. Beyond the inflation issues, it comes down to the simple economics principle of supply and demand.

In addition, the other associated food costs have increased. From labor to shipping, all the expenses impact the consumer and people are feeling it in their wallets.

But, when people have a craving for chicken wings, they may be willing to pay the price. If a big game party isn’t the same without a plate of chicken wings, people might have to dig a little deeper into that wallet.

In the end, billions of chicken wings will be eaten during Super Bowl LVI. From spicy to sweet and flats to drums, the plate will be piled high. And, make sure that there are plenty of napkins around. No one wants to commit the party foul of wiping their hands on their shirt or couch.
