For some people, dipping hot, crispy fries into a sweet, creamy milkshake is the irresistible salty, sweet combination. Although that food and flavor combination is quite enjoyable, sometimes it is not practical. Luckily, the Idaho Potato Commission and Van Leeuwen have partnered on the limited edition Malted Milkshake and Fries French Ice Cream.

According to the Idaho Potato Commission, French fries and ice cream edges out other flavor combinations like chicken and waffles. Although the methodology and reasoning were not shared, the notion seems apparent. The two foods make the perfect sweet and savory combination.

As Jamey Higham, President and CEO, IPC said, “the survey results confirmed for us that Idaho potatoes in any form, are the most versatile vegetable; the pairing options are endless. Idaho potatoes have earned their place at breakfast, lunch and dinner, now we’ve got dessert covered, too!”

Given that Van Leeuwen is no stranger to savory ingredients in its ice cream flavors, this partnership seemed like a match made in heaven. Even though some of the brand’s other savory based flavors might have pushed the dessert boundaries, this one is guaranteed to be a huge hit.

The Malted Milkshake and Fries French Ice Cream is described as toasty caramel-flavored ice cream studded with pieces of French fry pieces made with Idaho potato flakes. To be clear, it is not actually French fries in the ice cream. But, that scenario does not matter. It is the overall flavor combination that people want. It is said to capture that moment of dipping French fries into a milkshake.

A couple items to note, the toasty caramel-flavored ice cream is an interesting choice. Instead of using a classic vanilla, the slight sweetness of the caramel contrasting the salty notes of the French fry pieces should highlight the sweetness of the combination. In some ways, it is like the salt in a salted caramel dish.

Also, this ice cream flavor builds on the nostalgia trend that continues to influence the food world. Although some people might have never sat on a barstool at an old-school ice cream shop, they can appreciate the simplicity of enjoying the sweet life.

The special Malted Milkshake and Fries French Ice Cream from Idaho Potato and Van Leeuwen is available while supplies last. A pint retails for $12 and can be purchased online and in shops located in New York and Los Angeles.
