While MasterChef might always be a single home cook’s title to win, this Tastes of America season is unlike previous offerings. As the 20 home cooks face their first challenge, the judges present a MasterChef Season 13 twist. It might be both a blessing and a curse.

In several Gordon Ramsay FOX culinary competitions, the “immunity pin” has appeared. While that coveted accolade can keep a cook safe, it also makes them a target. For the MasterChef Season 13 twist, this immunity pin is more than just personal safety.

By earning a challenge’s immunity pin, that one home cook earns safety for themselves and their whole regional team. In addition, the single cook will be safe for the next challenge, too. The bigger twist with this immunity is the team’s safety.

When it was mentioned that MasterChef Season 13 is the most strategic season yet, the immunity pin could play into that concept. If one strong cook saves a region over and over, that scenario could be beneficial for the final rounds. It could clear the way for a strong cook to go further.

Depending how the immunity pin advantages play out, it could turn a particular cook into a target. Although MasterChef is not a popularity contest, it does help for cooks to get along with each other.

How did the MasterChef Season 13 twist impact the first challenge?

After the judges picked the top dish from each region, the battle for supremacy was fierce. All four dishes were quite impressive. The winning dish was presented by Kyle, with his beer battered lobster fries. He kept all the Midwest team members safe.

In this challenge, it was good luck for Wayne. Given that it appeared his risotto was a little iffy, that team safety was definitely a blessing.

Unfortunately, three home cooks had dishes that did not elevate regional state fair food. The three bottom cooks were Richie, Kendall, and Amanda. While Richie played it safe, his flavors were decent. Still, the judges wanted more.

Kendall’s dish was not well composed. The proportions were all off. It was less than elevated state fair food.

Unfortunately, the worst dish of the evening came from Amanda. Her tacos were far from elevated. It was a poor choice to try to make tacos from scratch for the first time. They lacked seasoning and her lack of experience was apparent in their presentation. If the commentary is that this dish would not pass muster at a home dinner, it is far from what the judges want to see on MasterChef. And, no one should ever interrupt Gordon Ramsay. That might have sealed her fate.

How the MasterChef Season 13 twist plays out over the first couple of episodes remains to be seen. It will definitely have an impact on the overall outcome. Be sure to watch new episodes of MasterChef Season 13 Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET or stream the next day on Hulu.
