LACTAID and Kelis sing the praises of It’s Dairy with flavorful milkshake recipe, interview
Looking up and down the dairy aisle, the options can become overwhelming. While the older generation might remember just a few cartons on the shelf, today’s landscape might have them looking to find the better choice that fits their lifestyle. When dairy is a desired, LACTAID is sitting front and center. With the help of Kelis, there is a new milkshake recipe that will have everyone running to the kitchen.
As seen on many LACTAID commercials, the beverage brand wants people to appreciate that its product is dairy. The farmers and their cows have found humorous ways to inform people that each carton contains the nutrients, flavor, taste, and texture, just without the stomach discomfort that can be associated with other dairy products.
With the recent campaign featuring Kelis, her iconic “Milkshake” song is transformed into a celebration of the “It’s Dairy” message. While the beat might be familiar, the lyrics are a reminder to pick up a LACTAID carton and taste the difference.
Ahead of this campaign launch, FoodSided spoke to Kelis about the partnership, her milkshake recipe featuring LACTAID, and her approach to balanced eating. While many people know her from the stage, the mom, entertainer and businesswoman lives and works on a farm. That connection to fresh, seasonal food is important to her and her family. Even though she might have gone to culinary school and watched her mom in professional kitchens, Kelis appreciates that a fulfilled life appreciates the bountiful food on the table.
While she might appreciate that a robust salad can be just as enjoyable as a sweet dessert, Kelis understands that concept must be learned by kids. She sets a good example, but she uses simple, easy recipes to find that balance.
As Kelis mentioned, “I’ve got three kids, I want them to eat, and I want them to be happy. A smoothie or a milkshake has been our go to option that they can make themselves. It is quick and easy. My son even makes it for himself. It is a simple, flavorful win moment for everyone.”
When she was approached for this partnership, she went to the people who she knew would offer their honest opinions, her kids. Even though their mother is a chef and they are very vocal about their likes and dislikes, she was willing to put the LACTAID to the test.
The results were positive. She said that her son did not complain and actually asked for more. That response sealed the deal for her. When a kid goes back for another serving, moms know that have won the battle.
Kelis commented, “I don’t like substituting stuff or reconfiguring things. That’s not how I cook. I’m as raw as you can get. The fact was that my son couldn’t tell the difference, found it totally delicious and went back for more. It was a win in my household.”
Whether that milkshake features some apricots picked from the tree on the farm or handful of fresh mint from the garden, she knows that the “It’s Dairy” base will bring the flavor and consistency to the creamy sip in the glass. Whether her kids want to go full out on the creative side or prefer a tried and true recipe, they have the independence to make it themselves and she feels the confidence of a quality product that they’re using.
Although her kids might be well versed in robust food options, Kelis appreciates that she needs to be thoughtful with her choices. When she is at home, on her farm, the fresh, local ingredients are within reach. For her, she has found a personal difference in how she feels when incorporating those food items into her lifestyle.
Kelis mentioned that she wants to pass down her good habits to her kids. It does not mean that she removes certain foods or categories from her eating choices. As she said, if the bread and butter is on the table, she is going to eat it. Denying that option is not a fulfilled life. But, those moments are balanced by coming back to the arugula from her garden or the fruit plucked from the orchard. Understanding how food impacts how you feel is just as important as the complexity of flavor on the plate.
While now is the time to reimagine the “Milkshake” song with a new message, the beat only highlights what needs to be remembered in any food conversation. No food should be completely eliminated without a meaningful conversation. As she sings about LACTAID and “It’s Dairy” the time is now to blend up a milkshake recipe that invites people to not only discover the flavor but appreciate how they feel after eating it.
