As the iconic Gordon Ramsay chef competition returned to FOX, the Hell’s Kitchen Season 22 signature dishes had both high praise and horrible criticism. While this challenge is a standard in the popular food television show, is it a predictor of eventual success? Based on previous seasons, the answer is unclear.

The Hell’s Kitchen Season 22 signature dishes had some extreme high notes and other moments where the dish never should have left the kitchen. From one chef using boxed pasta to another creating an abomination of biscuits, the simple cooking mistakes had some people wondering why these chefs didn’t even try to impress Gordon Ramsay.

On the other hand, a few dishes were almost ready for the Ramsay restaurant. From a perfectly cooked lamb dish to the beautiful simplicity of fresh pasta with clams, Ryan and Sammi impressed with their signature dishes. But, it does not mean that they will make it all the way to the finale.

Looking back at the previous seasons, there have been winners who impressed with their signature dish and there have been winners who bombed with that first challenge. It is not necessarily a clear predictor across the previous seasons.

But, in more recent seasons, doing well in the signature dish challenge has been a benefit. Last season’s winner, Alex, had a top signature dish. He did not win, but he was in the top two.

Looking back at other recent seasons, Mia won the signature dish challenge. Overall, the recent seasons show that it is important to at least do well, if not be in the top.

Still, nothing is predictable in Hell’s Kitchen. Could a chef who scored a 1 make an ultimate comeback? In some ways, that premise might be the ultimate American Dream story. Who doesn’t love an underdog overcoming the difficulties to succeed.

Everyone will have to watch the weekly episodes of Hell’s Kitchen Season 22 to see if that signature dish was a success predictor. New episodes air Thursday nights on FOX at 8 p.m. and stream the next day on Hulu.
