From late night cravings to planning a big event, online ordering convenience is the norm. From hectic schedules to just wanting to avoid the store, that ability to push, buy, and receive food at the front door is now part of people’s everyday lives. While the 2023 DoorDash trends report did a deep dive into all types of tasty food ordering behavior, this type of convenient food tops the must order list.

When one year ends, a look back can tell a lot about what people have been craving. From the recipe that took social media by storm to the food that saw a resurgence in popularity, discovering the next big thing requires knowing where people have been.

In the past 10 years since DoorDash began, the company has seen a variety of food trends that many people might not have expected. From unlikely flavor pairings to people’s willingness to embrace global flavors, no one is stuck in a tiny, pre-determined takeout box.

Looking back at the past 12 months, the 2023 DoorDash trends report found that finger foods, or food that does not necessarily require a fork and a knife, topped many orders. According to the findings, the top food items were:

2023 DoorDash trends report top ordered food nationwide

  • Fries
  • Chicken Quesadilla
  • Mozzarella Sticks
  • Garlic Naan
  • Spicy Chicken Sandwich
  • Pepperoni Pizza
  • Chips & Queso
  • Traditional Wings
  • Cobb Salad
  • Fried Rice

While this list is not necessarily snack food, it shows easy, approachable menu items that have a wide appeal. Although some of the items are not necessarily shareable, the list does seem like food which might be ordered with a group. Who hasn’t enjoyed wings and pizza for a game day or a Friday night dinner with friends?

While the top foods might be traditional, common orders, DoorDash predicts that 2024 will see consumers want more locally inspired food options. From cooking while traveling to the Bleisure extended stay trip, the convenience of getting a taste of the area without having to search for it appeals to a wide audience. Maybe a new category or curated list might appear in the app in the future.

As this year ends, many people are turning to DoorDash to help keep the to-do list in check. From last minute gifts to ordering a forgotten item for a party, nothing is left to chance. Luckily, DoorDash is ready to help.
