For many whiskey drinkers, Angel’s Envy has always soared with nuanced flavor and spirited creativity. The newest offering in the Cellar Collection takes the spirit in a different direction. Collaborating with another master distiller, this specialty spirit celebrates the complexity that comes with age.
Time and again, spirit brands appreciate that unique offerings and brand collaborations bring excitement. Even though the traditional releases and blends will aways have a place on the shelf, people look at the specialty offerings as a glimpse into the distillers’ creative process.
With the Cellar Collection Series, Vol. 5 Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in French Oak Extra Añejo Tequila Barrels, the collaboration with Patron Tequila’s Master Distiller, David Rodriguez, celebrates two crafts coming together to share their knowledge. While the aged spirits are quite different, the connection can be felt in the commitment to craft.
For Owen Martin, Angel’s Envy’s Master Distiller, the key was to identify a parallel between the production process. The first Cellar Collection innovation under his oversight, the offering takes a core concept from the brand and takes it in a new direction.
Martin explained, “We are always striving to showcase the unique character of a finishing cask and how it can amplify our base whiskey’s dynamic flavor – this release embodies that particularly well.”

The flavors in this release offer a great balance between the traditional whiskey notes and the anejo tequila. First, the vanilla notes are abundant. While there is always a touch of sweetness in Angel’s Envy, añejo tequila is usually has an underlying vanilla note. With a hint of oakiness, it makes the flavor comforting, familiar, and welcoming.
Additionally, the baking spices make it feel cozy. Without becoming cloying, the warmth makes it feel like a whiskey that is meant to be enjoyed while snuggling somewhere where relaxation is welcoming.
The touch of cracked pepper adds excitement. When combined with the slight vegetal notes that are often found in agave, the uniqueness piques the interests and entices another sip.
Ending with a slightly sweet note, it feels uplifting. The bright tropical fruits and orange blossom honey leaves the drinker feeling lighthearted.
When thinking about this whiskey offering, it would be delicious paired with a bold, robust mole. Or, even a spicy chocolate for a dessert. Even enjoyed on its own, the complexity of the whiskey should not be overshadowed by anything else.
The Cellar Collection Series Vol. 5 Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in French Oak Extra Añejo Tequila Barrels is available now at both retailers and ReserveBar. The suggested retail price is $269 a bottle.
