As warmer weather approaches, many people are looking for ways to switch up their daily routines, especially when it comes to food. Warmer weather means more outdoor activities, more daylight hours and more time to spend with family and friends. One way to introduce new food items into your grocery pantry is farmer’s markets.

Farmer’s markets can be found across the United States; some vary in size and may include a few local vendors, while there are others that span multiple city blocks. Farmer’s markets allow consumers an unique opportunity of buying food in season and interacting with local business owners.

Typically farmer’s markets are set up with little to no barriers between the consumer and the product. Seasonal fruits and vegetables often line tables that allow the consumer to hand pick which items best meet their needs. If you are not sure where to locate farmer’s markets or what items are in season, there are various websites that can offer some guidance.

For example, during Spring, it is recommended to purchase items like: strawberries, apricots and blackberries; all of which can be used in different meals throughout the spring season.  For example, strawberries can be added to yogurt or oatmeal, apricots can be grilled for a savory addition to meat forward meals and blackberries can be combined with sugar to make compote that can be drizzled over shortbread.

In addition to familiar favorites, farmer’s markets are more likely to have unique food items. For instance, in Maryland it is common to find food items inspired by the blue crab, which is in season from April 1st - December 15th. Vendors offer dipping sauces and seasonings that compliment the seasonal blue crab.

Farmer’s markets also have the social benefit of creating community; these spaces allow consumers to interact with the vendors and other people seeking similar products. At a farmer’s market consumers can sample items, ask questions about the produce, and control the quantity of the items purchased.

Farmer’s markets can be a fun and unique way for consumers to get out of their routine. Spring is the perfect opportunity to visit a local farmer’s market and find a new flavorful food product.
