Since many people are determined to be a “wee bit” Irish around St. Patrick’s Day, a spirited sipper can be a preferred way to celebrate. Although Chicago is known for dying the river green, a green-tinged beer should not the only option for the holiday. This year, Goose Island has a more flavorful option and is giving beer lovers more opportunities to enjoy its Shamrock Stout.
Goose Island is legendary in the stout beer world. While the brand might have pioneered the concept of bourbon barrel aged stout, it is always looking for creative and innovative ways to push the brewing category forward.
Although Bourbon Barrel Stout season is the gift unwrapped at the start of the holiday season, Goose Island is kicking off the spring with another way to celebrate one of its beloved beers.
Usually available only in its Fulton Street Taproom, the Shamrock Stout is available in bottles. Sold in a four-pack, the bottled variety ensures that more people can sip on the special offering.
For those unfamiliar with the specialty seasonal stout, the beer is similar to its bourbon barrel finishes but with a particular Irish slant. There is an inherent sweetness to the flavor. Cocoa nibs and vanilla are apparent, but the peppermint adds brightness. Not necessarily a nod to that favorite chocolate mint cookie, but that dessert would make for a smart beer and food pairing.

Overall, the flavor is rich, nuanced, and yet approachable. It is delicious with an old school plate of corned beef or a classic Chicago Dog. No matter if there is a deeply rooted connection to the
Emerald Isle or the idea is more fleeting, everyone is lucky to enjoy a glass of the Goose Island Shamrock Stout. Unlike the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, this treasure is easily attainable.
The special, limited edition beer is available at the Goose Island Taproom as well as select retailers in Illinois. More information can be found on the brand’s website.
