While she strives to be her best in every scenario, one lesson has helped to keep her grounded. She believes that life balance does not require everything being in perfect harmony.

Cristine Struble: How important is finding balance in your food choices? Have your eating habits changed as a mom?
Heather Rae El Moussa: Absolutely – finding balance in my food choices is everything, especially now as a mom. Motherhood shifted my perspective in a big way. Now, it’s all about fueling my body with intention—choosing nutrient-dense foods that give me energy, support my workouts, keep me present for my family and allow me to live this busy life! For me, food is healing and what we put in our bodies is so important.
Cristine: Why do you prioritize high protein options? Do those choices help keep your energy high?
Heather: I prioritize high-protein options because they’re truly the foundation of how I fuel my body throughout the day. As someone who’s always on the go—whether I’m driving my kids around, chasing after my little one, filming our show or creating content—protein helps keep me full and feeling strong. Orgain’s Plant-Based Organic Nutrition Shakes are perfect for my busy lifestyle and really help me make sure I am getting the protein and nutrients I need throughout the day. My kids love their Kid’s Organic Protein Nutrition Shakes too. I love adding them to their lunch boxes or having them ready to go in the car at school pickup.
Cristine: Do you subscribe to the idea that everyone eats the same meal? Is that easier to manage with your busy lifestyle?
Heather: I love homemade meals for dinner every night. Knowing the ingredients that go into our food and what we put into our bodies is so important. Usually, the kids will have the same meal as us, however I have been vegan for about 15 years now and I don’t push that on anybody, so the kids aren’t vegan. Sometimes we’ll make a few variations of the same meal to accommodate everyone’s dietary restrictions. Some of our favorite breakfasts are smoothies with Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder and Tarek loves oatmeal, so we add protein to that as well. We also mix the protein powder into vegan yogurt with fruit to make fresh parfaits.
Cristine: Since more people need on-the-go options, what are some of your favorite choices?
Heather: My favorites are Orgain’s Plant-Based Organic Protein Nutrition shakes; they are a great option for a protein boost on-the-go and have 22 key nutrients which is so helpful for making sure my diet is still nutritious when I’m out and about. They also have a kid’s version of this shake, so we make sure to keep those on hand as well. You can find them at Amazon, on Orgain’s website, at Whole Foods, and Costco.
Cristine: Moms often feel pressure to be perfect or live up to the image. How do you find balance in your life? How do you encourage other moms to let go of the pressure?
Heather: As a mom—and especially as someone who shares parts of my life online and TV—I’ve definitely felt that pressure to “do it all” or live up to this unrealistic standard of perfection. But over time, I’ve learned that balance doesn’t mean everything is always in perfect harmony—it means giving yourself permission to adjust, to breathe, and to let go of the guilt. For me, finding balance is about setting boundaries, fueling my body well, moving in ways that feel good and being fully present with my family when it matters most. Some days that means a structured workout and a perfectly prepped meal, and other days it’s a walk with my baby and an Orgain protein shake in the car—and both are totally okay.
Cristine: What are some ways that you allow yourself to have "me time?" What are some fun ways to give yourself permission to recharge?
Heather: Me time is so important, and I am a true believer in doing something for yourself every day. Even just little things like going on walks on the beach, finding a beautiful moment, taking a break from my phone or having quiet time by myself once a day makes all the difference. I also allow myself to set aside time to workout as an important form of self-care to make you feel good.
Whether a person chooses to say no to a dinner invitation, say yes to watching another episode of The Flip Off, or just decides to lie in bed for another 15 minutes after the alarm goes off, boundaries are vital to appreciating one's true self. Grab a shake, start the day, and decide that every choice will be a good one.
