Over the years, Bardstown has proven itself within the distillery world. With numerous accolades for its various releases, the company appreciates that being different is a good thing. Given that whiskey and bourbon drinkers are always looking to creative takes on America’s spirit, the brand not only found loyal followers but also excites new drinkers to enjoy a pour.

While many bourbon drinkers happily pour a glass of the Origin Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, some people prefer to look to the next great innovation. Altering the mashbill opens a new flavor profile and expands the possibilities for the distillers.

Nick Smith, Director of Distillation and Head Distiller for Bardstown Bourbon Co, spoke about the High Wheat Bourbon. He said, “Once we perfected the distillate, we focused on the aging modifications that would make this whiskey best-in-class. The lower barrel entry proof of 108 pulls more wood sugars in from the onset, leading to a drinking experience that is elegant and complex.”

When a bottle of Bardstown’s High Wheat Bourbon is opened, it is not necessary the wheat which is initially apparent. There is a sweetness due to the increased wood sugars. While that sweet is apparent, it is never overbearing. In some ways, it offers a roundness that makes each sip even more enjoyable.

Even though the sugary note can be felt in the nose and even on the palate, a bright lemon and a juicy apricot add a zestiness that is balanced by an underlying spice. While the overall drinking experience is definitely more full bodied, there is an approachability which makes the liquor quite drinkable.

Best enjoyed neat, this High Wheat Bourbon can be served with a little extras. For example, a candied lemon garnish highlights two flavor components in the offering. The idea is to complement yet never overshadow the unique bourbon offering. Even a nice herbal note could create a unique offering that allows the bourbon to bloom into its potential.
