One of the most classic food pairings is a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. From warding off a winter chill to being a spoonful of comfort, the food goes beyond only sustenance. With the new Campbell’s Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup flavor, cracking open that can is more than just another meal.

Over the years, Campbell’s has walked a fine line of sticking to its traditional offerings yet being aware of food trends. While there have been intensely spiced offerings and other nods to popular flavors, the brand never loses sight of its heritage. A great, easy meal can be found in the pantry. There is a reason why that Andy Warhol visual still resonates after all these years.

The new Campbell’s Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup adds a touch of innovation to the conversation. Depending on how it is prepared, the flavor can be more tomato forward or cheese forward. In some ways, it might be a soup innovation that will change the food conversation going forward.

According to Gary Mazur, Vice President Soup and Broth, Campbell’s Meals and Beverages division, “Grilled cheese and tomato soup has always been perfect together. It is a classic pairing for all generations, and it has drawn increasing pop culture fandom in recent years. Nothing can top the greatness of a grilled cheese sandwich dunked in Campbell’s Tomato soup. As we developed our first ever limited time only condensed flavor, it was the clear choice.”

Specifically, the soup can be reconstituted in two ways, either with milk or water. By adding milk, the flavor enhances the dairy notes and makes it cheesier. With water, the tomato sweetness is more apparent. Given the brand’s statement, it is unclear if a non-dairy milk can be used as a substitute.

Still, the difference in flavor makes one can of soup become more versatile. While it is easily a meal, itself, the soup could flavor a pasta dish or be used as a sauce in a casserole. Appreciating how to highlight the different flavors makes it a pantry staple.

To kick off the new Campbell’s Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup offering, the food brand is giving away 412 cans in honor of National Grilled Cheese Day on April 12. More information can be found on found on the brand’s website.

The new soup flavor will hit retailers in March. Check with local stores for pricing and availability.
