Dane County Farmers’ Market is a Madison, Wisconsin tradition
Circling the Capitol, the Dane County Farmers' Market is a Saturday tradition in Madison, Wisconsin. From the garden's bounty to the delights from iconic, local food vendors, this farmers’ market is a destination for any food traveler. Considered one of the largest and most respected farmers' markets, it has become a must on every food travel bucket list.
While some people might think of Madison as a college town, food lovers know that the Dane County Farmers’ Market is a huge event on Saturday mornings. With hundreds of vendors, the event is gigantic. Some people might be shopping for a special dinner or making their purchases for the week. No matter the reason, the event has become a place to see and be seen by all.
Since the space is so large, it is possible to start at any corner and stroll around the Capitol Square. But, one rule must be followed, do not go against traffic. There is a very specific direction that everyone walks, counter-clockwise. There might not be a logical reason for the direction, but everyone does it.
Even more importantly before joining the crowds on a Saturday morning, visitors should come prepared. Although locals might bring a wagon, a few shopping bags can be helpful to stash all the purchases. The purveyors might have some bags, but it can be easier to have a tote or two.
Also, cash is king. While many vendors accept vemno or other electronic payments, cash can be easier to make those transactions move quickly. A couple of dollars for tomatoes, fresh greens, and other items makes the lines move quickly.
What types of food is sold at the Dane County Farmers’ Market?
As one of the largest and oldest farmers’ markets, the Dane County Farmers' Market is a spot where local farmers and vendors set up shop on Saturday mornings. While many stalls hail from nearby, the food sold is more than produce. The fresh from the farm offerings are abundant, but there are other items available for sale as well.
In addition to the fruits and vegetables, there are a variety of fresh cheeses, meats, and even flowers. It is quite easy to curate a perfect meal, from the food to the ambiance, at the market.
More importantly, there are several local favorites at the market. Bakeries offer unique items. From traditional cookies and scones to vegan options, there is plenty of sustenance to keep the hunger at bay while strolling the market.
While the farmers’ fresh produce and offerings are the biggest draw, a Madison staple, and must eat, is usually at the market. Stella’s Bakery, known for its Hot & Spicy Cheese Bread, has a stall. All the bakery’s items are delicious, but the cheese bread is a must.
For over 25 years, this bread has been a staple in the city. Tucked inside that pillowy bread are chunks of cheese. It is the perfect bite and one that must be eaten. It is a carb lover’s dream come true.
Even if visitors to Madison love to stop at UW for ice cream or have made a reservation at L'etoile, a visit would not be complete without enjoying the Dane County Farmers’ Market. Check with the organization for operating times, since it is closed for some winter moments.
