It is a celebration of embracing life, living to the fullest, and celebrating every moment as it comes.
Hough graciously answered some questions about his role in the StarKist campaign, some of his food preferences, and what people can expect from the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars.
Cristine Struble: The new StarKist campaign uses the word “flex.” How do you think that your food choices help you “flex” your best self?
Derek Hough: "For me, "flexing" my best self is all about feeling strong, energized, and ready to take on whatever challenges come my way—whether that's on the dance floor, on stage, or just in everyday life. Lean protein options, like the StarKist pouches, are absolutely crucial for this. They support muscle recovery, keep my energy levels up, and overall, they just help me feel my best. Through the "Flex with StarKist" campaign, we're encouraging everyone to share their proudest 'flex' moments—whether it's a big achievement or a small victory—because it's all about celebrating those wins fueled by healthy living. CS: Many people are learning the importance of choosing protein-rich foods. Why are these types of food choices important for you and your busy lifestyle? Have you found that protein-rich foods help to fuel your fitness and lifestyle choices?

Each StarKist pouch is fully cooked and provides 8-17 grams of protein per serving, which is perfect for keeping me fueled and ready to go, no matter where I am or what I’m doing. Whether I'm heading to a rehearsal, a workout, or just need a quick snack in between meetings, having that convenient, high-quality protein option is key. It really helps me maintain my energy levels and supports my fitness goals, allowing me to keep up with the demands of my lifestyle."
CS: More people are appreciative of easy, on-the-go food options. Is StarKist a convenient choice for your busy lifestyle?
DH: "Definitely! I love how convenient StarKist's ready-to-eat protein pouches are. They’re an easy add to any meal, anywhere. Whether I’m in a rush to get to a rehearsal or just need something quick before heading to a workout, these pouches are my go-to. They fit perfectly with my on-the-go lifestyle."
CS: In many homes, StarKist has been a staple. Do you have dishes or recipes that are your favorites?
DH: "StarKist has definitely been a staple in my pantry, and I love that they offer so much more than just tuna now. They have a variety of fully-cooked proteins like chicken, salmon, and now beef that come in convenient, ready-to-eat pouches. Plus, they have over 30 great-tasting flavors! One of my favorites is the StarKist Chicken Creations Bold Buffalo Style Pouch—I love throwing it over a salad for a quick and tasty meal or eating it right out of the pouch on-the-go. It’s super easy, full of flavor, and keeps me feeling satisfied. There’s really something for everyone with StarKist!"
CS: From Dancing with the Stars to your tour, you make dance and movement look effortless. How would you encourage the person who feels like they have two left feet to get up and be unafraid to dance?
DH: "Dance is something that everyone is capable of because its movement to music. So many people avoid it because they think they are awkward or that people are judging them. I will say, moving your body is infectious. We see someone dancing and we WANT to dance with them. My advice is just to start. Understandably it can be daunting, but dancing doesn’t have to mean signing up for 12 weeks of classes. It can be putting on your favorite music when you clean the house or when you’re cooking dinner and just letting your body move."
CS: Dancing with the Stars is set to return. Why do you think that this show has been so successful for over 30 seasons? Do you think that the varied backgrounds of all the participants adds to the appeal?
DH: "Dancing with the Stars just brings joy into everyone’s home. It is feel-good programming, and the diverse cast offers everyone a person to root for. This is a show that lets you go on a journey and gives you a peek at someone achieving goals, overcoming adversity and having a great time, learning something new, and being proud of their progress along the way. We see struggle and triumph. What’s not to like!"
CS: Without revealing any secrets, is there a celebrity that you would love to see compete on Dancing with the Stars?
DH: "By the time this is out, the cast will have been revealed. What I will say about the cast of DWTS is that every season I’m amazed by the people who are a part of this show. And oftentimes there are people in the cast that I’m surprised to see listed…in a good way. There is always someone who is jaw dropping. I love the cast reveal just as much as the audience. It gets me super excited about the season."
