For 151 years, Holland America Line (HAL) has celebrated its Dutch heritage as its ships have traversed the globe. While the beautifully appointed ships have nods to that European culture, the food offers guests a taste of the Netherlands wherever they roam. The simple stroopwafel is a sweet example.

Anyone who has stepped aboard a HAL ship appreciates that there are both grand and subtle references to its Dutch culture. From a special Orange Party to the Dutch dinner, those moments allow the cruise brand to infuse every trip with a little taste of its homeland.

In addition to those events, enjoying a coffee or tea service is another example of the Dutch traditions. Beyond the traditional blue and white serving pieces, it is the little gestures that make these beverage breaks special. For example, there is a tradition of having a glass of water with the coffee. It is the Dutch way.

Earlier this year, Holland America Line partnered with Daelmans Stroopwafel. The sweet, “syrup waffle” has become a favorite across the world. Whether the larger version sits atop a coffee mug, allowing the steam to gently warm the caramel center or a mini version nibbled with a spot of tea, the reality is that this food and beverage on board pairing is another celebration to the HAL Dutch culture.

To celebrate World Stroopwafel Day, September 30, Holland America Line is offering several celebrations across New York City. First, Baked by Melissa will feature a specialty cupcake. As seen by the photo, the reference to both the stroopwafel and the Dutch culture is clear.

Even those who do not instantly see the connection will eagerly run to get a taste of the tiny treat. The special mini-cupcakes will be available only on September 30 at Baked by Melissa's Columbus Circle location, 975 8th Ave, NY, NY. A 12-pack will sell for $19.

To surprise and delight residents across the city, Holland America Line will be launching HAL cruise ships (actually decorated bikes) and will be making special deliveries throughout the day. Be sure to say dankjewel when accepting that stroopwafel treat.

This special celebration is another example how Holland America Line is engaging with people. Last year’s Top Chef finale on board the Eurodam showcased how food is more than just a cornucopia of delights. From Chef Morimoto influence as Fresh Fish Ambassador to bringing sustainable food conversations to every meal, the brand understands that guests want to feel connected to the total experience. The stunning locales might take their breath away, but it is the warm, welcoming hospitality that brings people back to travel again.

Whether it is World Stroopwafel Day, Dutch Day, or just another Monday, take a moment to think about the little sweet touches that make food and travel memorable. It might lead you back to a ship brand that has been around for more than 150 years.
