Whether it is National Hot Dog Day or just a regular Wednesday, the classic food can often cause a spirited conversation. When it comes to hot dog topping choices, the majority of people agree about this one simple fact. Do you agree with this hot dog hot take?

Hot dogs are often served with a side of food controversy. From the continual debate whether the hot dog is or is not a sandwich to using ketchup as a condiment, the reality is hot dog opinions can be as heated as the grill where they are cooked.

Recently, Ball Park encouraged everyone to express their opinions on that favorite food. From simple to over the top, the brand found that people are quite passionate about their preferred hot dog topping choice.

As Michael Roslen, Senior Brand Manager, Ball Park brand said, “We know how passionate consumers are about their hot dog toppings, from quirky personal preferences to hardline regional styles. Not only are we encouraging consumers to share their unique 'Hot Dog Hot Takes,' but we're also providing public access to our Hot Dog Hotline to help fire up new recipe ideas for this grilling season."

While some people might drag it through the garden and others prefer a slathering of mustard, Ball Park determined that there are some tried and true hot dog topping choices. According to its survey, 8 in 10 people add multiple toppings to their hot dogs.

With multiple toppings, those flavors need to work in harmony. For example, neon relish with some chili might make for an interesting picture, but that flavor combination is confusing. Maybe some pickled onions instead of the sweet relish would be a better choice.

Since people are piling those toppings high, it would be curious to know if anyone has succumbed to eating the hot dog with a fork and knife. It might not be the traditional eating method, but it is better than spilling on your shirt.

Other Ball Park survey findings included the most popular topping being cheese. Whether that cheese is shredded, sliced, or even liquified, the cheese seems to melt well with other toppings, too. After all, a chili dog without cheese is just sad.

Lastly, non-traditional condiments are seeing a surge in popularity. From bacon jam to ranch dressing, many people are leaning into their favorite flavors and experimenting with how they can top that hot dog.

With no wrong way to “dress a dog,” Ball Park wants to see everyone’s “Hot Takes.” Check out social media for people sharing their special offerings. Hopefully, the ideas are delicious not just outrageous.
