As everyone snuggles into cozy clothes and chilly nights, soup season is here. While that carefully cradled warm bowl feels welcoming, it is the first spoonful that instantly brings the satisfying comforting flavor. While all those food sentiments may be true, what do shoppers really order when they are craving a bowl of soup?

Instacart always has a plethora of food information compiled from those shopping orders. From favorite holiday foods to cost saving measures, each delivery gives everyone a little more insight into what people want in their refrigerator and pantry.

During November, canned soup orders increase. Whether it is the first snowfall or just the longing to have a simple, warm meal, Instacart shared 6.4% of orders include canned soup. While there are a multitude of flavors on the shelf, one continues to be the top choice.

While some people might refer to it as soothing the soul, Chicken Noodle remains the top selling soup flavor according to Instacart. Now through February, data shows that Chicken Noodle Soup is the top purchased soup. Even though some people might have traditional homemade recipes, the reality is that buying a can is the simple solution. Luckily, there are plenty of flavorful options on the shelf.

The top choice is Chicken Noodle, but other classic flavors find their way into people’s shopping carts, too. Cream of Chicken and Cream of Mushroom are the other top choices. The creamy, hearty flavors are filling.

Looking at the other soups, they are not just soup. They are integral parts in casseroles, sauces, and more. After all that Midwest hotdish or casserole needs that creamy sauce, which is helped by a creamy soup base, to make it taste even better.

Do regions influence soup buying preferences?

According to Instacart, shoppers’ locations do influence their soup preferences. Although it might sound silly, Floridians might not be as drawn to New England Clam Chowder. That dish might be a staple in other coastal regions, but Floridians gravitate towards other options, like Bean Soup.

Still, looking at regional preferences does give both shoppers and brands insight. There could be a reason why stores in the Midwest have an abundance of Cream of Mushroom (yes, the casserole reference) or Southern states loving Cream of Chicken for a similar concept.

While there are plenty of people who will make a case for a butternut squash soup, split pea, or other rustic varieties, the reality is that classics, simple flavors top the buy list. Other options might be the preferred choice at a restaurant, but the tried and true canned options find their way to the shopping cart.

Soup season is here. Whether you slurp, sip, or spoon that bowl of comfort food, one concept is universal. There is always a reason to add another can to the shopping cart.
