From the melted slice sandwiched between two pieces of bread to the creamy goodness smothering pasta, a great cheddar cheese is a versatile, favorite food. Tillamook understands that people are willing to go to great lengths for their cheese and dairy products. Like part of the brand’s story, that love of flavorful food is unsinkable.

Sometimes there is a story behind a brand’s curious promotion. It is more than the earworm that becomes part of a food brand’s soundtrack. A small sliver of brand history can be transformed into a talked about moment that creates a craving.

Recently, Tillamook County Creamery Association announced a curious promotion. The brand is going to give away 1,909 pound of cheese. While that literal and figurative boat of cheese caught people’s attention, it is more than a photo to stop the continuous scroll. It is a slice of the brand’s history.

In today’s day and age, a twice sunk ship might have had some people just moving onto the next venture. For Tillamook, that Morning Star proved to be its guiding light in bringing people the delicious food from its co-operative.

As Kate Boltin, Executive Vice President of Marketing at Tillamook County Creamery Association said, "For over a century, our farmer-owned co-operative has shared the same determination that inspired those aboard the historic Morning Star. Since the ship's maiden voyage, we've continued to deliver an unwavering commitment to quality ingredients you can. Generations of dairy fans have fueled our passion for delivering premium cheddar, and that's why we are going overboard this year by gifting a literal boatload of cheese."

The giveaway will get people clicking, but it does and it should do more. Choosing one block of cheddar over another is not a blind grab. Creating a great cheese is dependent on various factors from the milk used to the cheesemaker’s knowledge. All the great flavor is not just luck. Just like a guiding star in the night sky, knowing how to get to the end result requires skill.

For now, open a package of Tillamook cheese, enjoy a scoop of ice cream, or eat something delicious from the brand’s line-up. That first group of farmers were determined to keep going even if the waters were a little choppy. That dedication can be tasted in every bite.
