Danny DeVito turns up the awkward in M&M’s Super Bowl teaser

Danny DeVito is starring in M&M’s upcoming Super Bowl commercial. The 73-year-old actor didn’t hold anything back in the awkward department.

As we’ve seen in recent years, Super Bowl ads have been getting weirder and weirder. Mountain Dew’s “Puppy Monkey Baby” commercial comes to mind — I had nightmares about that one for a week. Now, M&M’s is attempting to make their own mark on people’s subconsciouses.

On Monday, the chocolate candy extraordinaire released a teaser for their upcoming Super Bowl commercial. It stars actor Danny DeVito swimming in a velvety pool of liquid chocolate, an ode to previous advertising campaigns featuring the iconic red M&M piece dipping into chocolaty goodness.

Here’s the thing… It’s just as weird as it sounds. It’s not like DeVito dives into the chocolate or just sinks in. No, he takes it to a whole other level, getting a little too comfortable in his cocoa pool. Some may even say he takes it to a sensual level, but I’d prefer not to let my mind wander into that black hole of creepiness. Once you’re in, you’ll never get out.

So prepare your eyes and brain for this.

I can only imagine where it goes from there. You have to keep in mind that this is a teaser — for a Super Bowl ad. Chances are it’s going to go to places we never wanted to see DeVito go. If you have young children, you may even want to have them leave the room before this commercial runs its course on Super Bowl Sunday.

Believe or not, DeVito reveled in the opportunity to submerge himself in chocolate.

"When M&M’S approached me about starring in their Super Bowl commercial, I quickly jumped on the opportunity to partner with such an iconic brand,” said DeVito. “Plus, who can resist seeing me in a giant pool of chocolate?!"

Yeah… Sorry Danny, but it’s not nearly as alluring of an idea as you think it is. Still, if you’re tuned in on February 4, chances are you’ll get the opportunity to watch DeVito prove himself to be the un-sexiest chocolate pool swimmer in history.

Again, I just want to make sure you’re mentally prepared for what could be lurking just around the corner. When DeVito’s full Super Bowl spot airs, he’ll have 30 seconds to carry on his awkward love affair with liquid chocolate. If this teaser has shown us anything, it’s that M&M’s isn’t afraid to max out the “weirdness” meter.
