Starbucks’ new Juniper Latte is an unusual flavor for the season. But, does that wintery beverage have a familiar flavor that you just can’t place?

Juniper latte? The new Starbucks holiday flavor could have a few fans scratching their heads at this latest edition flavor. Still, there is a sense of familiar with this particular flavor. That familiar flavor doesn’t come from your morning coffee, though.

As people finally finish all those holiday leftovers, Starbucks’ newest latte flavor might have been scratching their head. Juniper isn’t a typical menu item for the coffee giant. In the world of mocha, caramel and even peppermint, juniper seems like an unlikely flavor choice. But, maybe it really isn’t.

Juniper, actually juniper berries, is the flavor that you taste when you sip on gin. Whether you enjoy a good martini or a classic gin and tonic, that botanical note comes from the juniper. Some people love this flavor and other people stay far away from it.

The pine forward flavor seems a little unlikely for a latte. While people might enjoy a fresh pine scent from their Christmas tree, this flavor isn’t normally found in a sweeter beverage. Although it is found in tea, this flavor combination is drastically different from the typical Starbucks sugar forward beverages.

It is curious that juniper is the new flavor. Juniper berries are a common ingredient in many British recipes. From hearty game to even robust sauce, this botanical flavor can add a depth of flavor unlike other ingredients. But, it is an acquired taste.

Although not a flavor trend, British influenced foods and beverages have seen an increase in popularity. Maybe it is everyone’s obsession with royalty this year. Even the age old gin and tonic has seen a resurgence.

Additionally, there could be a medicinal reason that Starbucks went with a juniper latte. Juniper is believed to a cure-all for the common cold or even just aches and pains. As the frigid temperatures take over and everyone gets run ragged during the holidays, maybe a taste of juniper can help everyone feel a little more energized.
