As 2018 comes to a close, McDonald’s proved in the last year that the brand can use it position not only to improve itself but to commit to a better tomorrow.

McDonald’s is and will continue to be a force in the food world. Whether you enjoy the iconic Big Mac or prefer the all-day breakfast menu, the fast food giant is a leader in the food industry. While the Golden Arches might have started as a convenient, quick food service option, the company has positioned itself as an influencer across the board.

In 2018, McDonald’s focused beyond the new menu options and fun promotions. In some ways, the past year has been the year of change for the industry icon. As consumers wanted more from the companies, the brand looked to answer that change. From responsible practices to leading the industry in innovation, the fast food giant proved, yet again, it is a leader, not a follower.

Specifically in the last year, McDonald’s created nine initiatives that focused creating a better us, not just a better company. Using its scale for good, the company took the lead in sustainability issues and global environmental issues. By being part of the solution, the company encourages everyone to find a way to build a better tomorrow.

Here are ways five that McDonald’s focuses on being part of the solution for a better tomorrow.

Guest packaging

Sustainable packaging is a commitment that both guests and the planet want. The company has committed to source “all guest packaging from renewable, recycled or certified sources and goal to recycle guest packaging in 100% of restaurants… by 2025.”

Greenhouse gas emissions

Greenhouse gas emissions have a negative impact on the environment. The company became the “first restaurant company in the world to set an approved Science Based Target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Sustainable fish

Sustainable fish is the key to keeping the oceans full of life. “McDonald’s USA marks five years as the first and only global restaurant company to serve MSC certified fish at every U.S. location.”

Cup solution

Disposable cups can be a burden on the overflowing landfills. This year, the company partnered with “Closed Loop Partners to develop a global recyclable and/or compostable cup solution through the NextGen Cup Challenge and Consortium.”

Sustainable coffee

Climate change can threaten a variety of crops, like coffee. Since many people would be distraught without their caffeine fix, McCafé sought to educate consumers with its McCafé Sustainable Coffee Journey experience. The company looks to use sustainable coffee in its restaurants.
